Black & White Striped Hat

This Bag and hat can be made with:
The Famous “PURITAN” CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
or
“DE LUXE” Quality CROCHET COTTON, Article 346
4 balls White and 2 balls Black or colors desired for bag.
2 balls White and 1 ball Black for hat.
6 balls White and 2 balls Black will make entire set.
Steel crochet hook No. 1 or No. 2.
2 ¼ yds. Black velvet tubing.

HAT

Set is worked with a double strand of thread throughout. With White, ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or the following rounds. Place marker at beginning of each round.

2nd Round. 2 s c in each s c.

3rd Round. Working in s c, increase in every other s c. Work 1 round even.

5th Round. Same as 3rd round.

6th Round. Increase in every 3rd s c. Work 1 round even. 8th Round. Increase in every 4th s c. Work 2 rounds even.

11th Round. Increase in every 3rd s c. Work 2 rounds even.

14th Round. Increase in every 4th s c. Work 1 round even.

16th Round. Increase in every 5th s c. Work 2 rounds even.

19th Round. Increase in every 20th s c. Work 12 rounds even.

32nd Round. 1 s c in each s c, picking up entire st by inserting hook from front to back and to front again, join in 1st s c, cut thread.

With Black, ch 13, 2 d c in 4th st from hook, skip 2 sts of ch, s c in next st, * ch 2, 2 d c in same space (shell), skip 2 sts of ch, s c in next st, repeat from * once, ch 3, turn.

2nd Row. 2 d c in same space, s c in ch 2 loop of next shell, ch 2, 2 d c in same space, s c in ch 2 loop of next shell, ch 2, 2 d c in same space, insert hook in ch 2 loop of next shell, pull loop through, drop Black, pick up White and complete the s c, ch 3, turn.

3rd Row. 2 d c in same space, s c in loop of next shell, * ch 2, 2 d c in same space, s c in loop of next shell, repeat from * once, ch 3, turn. Continue working in shell st pattern having 3 shells in each row working 1 more row White, drop White (when changing color always complete last half of st with next color), * 2 rows Black, 2 rows White, repeat from* 19 times or until piece is long enough to go around lower edge of hat, cut thread.

Sew long sides together filling slightly to form a roll. Sew 2 short ends together. Sew to lower edge of hat as illustrated. Run hat wire through about a 22 inch length of velvet tubing, fold to form a bow.

BAND: With White, ch 23, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remaining st of ch, cut thread. Wrap twice around center of bow and sew bow to hat as illustrated.
