The traditional favorite of American afghans—the versatile granny design in a new guise. We have used a shaded color along with black, but you may use all the scraps in your workbasket to obtain a jewel-tone effect, with black as the border on all the squares.

Afghan measures 48 x 72 inches ... Motifs measure 6 inches square

MOTIF (Make 96) ... Starting at cen­ter with Greens ch 5. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring (ch 2, 3 dc in ring) 3 times; ch 2. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Sl st in next 2 dc and in next sp, ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, ch 2—corner sp—and 3 dc; (ch 1, in next sp make 3 dc, ch 2—corner sp—and 3 dc) 3 times; ch 1. Join as before. Break off and fasten. 3rd rnd: Attach Black to any corner sp, ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, in next corner sp make 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc) 3 times; ch 1, 3 dc in last ch-1 sp, ch 1. Join. Break off and fasten. 4th rnd: Attach Greens to any corner sp, ch 3, in same sp make 2 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc; ch 1, (in each ch-1 sp make 3 dc, ch 1 to next corner; in next corner sp make 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc; ch 1) 3 times; make 3 dc, ch 1, in each of the remaining ch-1 sps. Join. Break off and fasten. 5th rnd: With Black repeat 4th rnd.
With Black sew 8 x 12 Motifs neatly together.

BORDER ... 1st rnd (right side): With Black sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join to first sc. Turn. 2nd rnd (wrong side): Sl st in each sc around. Join. Break off and fasten. Block to measurements.
