Star Stitch Set Pattern

Size: Infants

REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 5-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn
CROCHET HOOK: #5 Afghan hook

SWEATER: Starting at the back. Chain 41 sts. Insert needle in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, leaving this loop on hook. In each remaining ch draw up a loop in the same manner until there are 41 loops on the hook. ROW 1: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops and repeat from * until 1 loop remains on the needle. ROW 2: Draw up a loop through each vertical bar across row, (41 loops on hook). Repeat row 1 and 2 until the piece measures 6 inches in all, ending with row 1. SHOULDER AND RIGHT SIDE: Work over 12 vertical bars. Working in the pattern on just these sts make 3 inches, ending with row 1. Tie a separate piece of yarn at neck edge and make a ch of 6 sts. Now work in the pattern across the shoulder and these 6 chain sts, until the piece measures 6 inches from front neck edge, ending with row 1. Make 1 row of slip st across work. Break yarn. LEFT FRONT: Tie yarn at the 13th vertical bar from armhole edge and work to correspond to the right shoulder and front.

PATTERN: Tie yarn at corner of left neck edge with the right side of work facing you. ROW 1: Make a ch of 3 sts, pull up a loop in 2nd chain from hook and in next ch; and in base of ch st; pull up a loop in next st, (5 loops on needle), yarn over and pull through all loops, ch 1, (this chain forms the eyelet of star stitch), * pull up a loop in eyelet; side of st; and in base of st; pull up a loop in next 2 rows, (6 loops on needle); yarn over and pull through all loops on needle, ch 1, repeat between *'s down to within 3 stitches of corner, ease in pattern around corner, and all others that you come to. Repeat between *'s across front; along complete length of side; across back; up second side; across front; up right front to neck edge; 1 s c in last st. ROW 2: Ch 3, turn; 2 d c in eyelet of each star stitch on row below, (at corners place 3 d c in 4 of the eyelets for increases); repeat around sweater ending with 1 d c in last eyelet; 1 d c in top of turning stitch. Ch 3, turn; ROW 3: Repeat row 1 all around Break yarn. SLEEVES: Place a marker 3½ inches each side of shoulder. This 7-inches is for the sleeve. With the wrong side of work facing you, tie yarn in an eyelet. Ch 4 sts; make a d c in same eyelet; 2 d c in each eyelet across row to marker ending with 2 d c in an eyelet. Ch 3, turn; work back and forth in the pattern as on edges of sweater until the sleeve measures 3 inches from underarm, ending with a star st row. Break yarn. Sew underarm seams. Make the other sleeve the same way. BEADING AT NECK EDGE: With the right side of work facing you, tie yarn at neck edge, ch 5 sts; * skip 1 st, 1 d c in next st, ch 2, repeat from * around neck edge.

BOOTIES: Chain 10 sts, pick up 1 st in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining sts, (10 loops). Work in the afghan st until the instep measures 1½-inches; ending with row 2. Ch 13 sts. Break yarn. Tie yarn at opposite corner and make a ch of 13 sts, do not break the yarn, pull up 1 loop in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 11 sts; pull up 1 loop in each row along side of instep; 9 loops across toe; pull up 1 loop in each row along 2nd side of instep and in the remaining 13 chain sts. Work back and forth on these sts in afghan st for 7 complete rows, (about 1½-inches). Break yarn. TOP PART: With the right side of the work facing you, tie yarn at the beginning of 13 sts, make the star st pattern across the 13 sts, across instep and on the last 13 sts. Work back and forth in the pattern as on the sweater for 2½ inches; ending with a star st row. Sew back and sole of bootie. MAKE THE OTHER BOOTIE THE SAME WAY.

BONNET: Ch 3 sts, join with a slip st to form a ring. 1st round: 6 s c into ring. (Mark the beginning of the round with a colored thread as an aid in counting). 2nd round: 2 s c in each st around, (12 sts). 3rd round: 1 s c in next st; 2 s c in next st; repeat around once. 4th round: 1 s c in next 2 sts; 2 s c in next st, repeat around once. Continue in the above manner having 1 more st between each increase until you have 12 sts between each increase, (84 sts). Over the next 60 sts, starting with the star st row work the following: 1 star st row; 1 row of d c; 1 row of star st; 1 row of d c. Now work 7 complete rows of afghan st and work another pattern panel as before (4 rows). Make another row of star stitch. Break yarn. BAND AT NECK EDGE: With the right side of the work facing you, pull up 1 loop on each row along side; across back and across 2nd side of bonnet. Work 3 complete rows of afghan st. Work 1 row of slip st to finish off edge. Trim with ribbon.
