Boy's Helmet Pattern

Size: 6 mo. to 1 yr.

REQUIREMENTS:

YARN: 3-ounces of 4-ply Knitting Worsted.
Angora for trimming
CROCHET HOOK: Bone #3

SIDE CIRCLES: Chain 3 sts, join with a slip st to form a ring. 1st round: Make 6 s c into the ring. (Do not join, mark the beginning of the round with a colored thread as an aid in counting your rounds). 2nd round: 2 s c in each stitch around, (12 sts). 3rd round: * 1 s c in next st; 2 s c in next st; repeat from * around once. 4th round: * 1 s c in next 2 sts; 2 s c in next st; repeat from * around once. Continue in the above manner in­creasing 6 sts on around on each round until you have 11 sts between each increase and 78 sts are on the round. Break yarn. SECOND CIRCLE: Work as the first one, but do not break the yarn at end of last round. Now work as follows: PATTERN: Ch 2, pull up a loop in 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop in base of ch, pull up a loop in next st, (4 loops on hook); yarn over and pull through all loops, ch 1 (eyelet); * pull up a loop in eyelet, pull up a loop in side of st, pull up a loop in base of st, pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts, (6 loops on hook); yarn over and pull through all loops, ch 1, repeat from * across 52 sts, (leaving out 26 sts for back section.) Ending with a s c in last st. ROW 2: Ch 2, turn; 2 s c in each eyelet on row below, ending with 2 s c in top of turning chain. ROW 3: Chain 2, pull up a loop in 2nd st from hook, pull up a loop in next 3 sts, yarn over and pull through all 5 loops, ch 1, repeat from * of row 2 across remainder of row. Repeat row 2 and 3 until the work measures 3 inches of pattern stitch, ending with s c row. Break yarn. Sew this last row to first circle. S c around edge with angora. STRAP: Ch 5 sts; work back and forth in s c for 4½-inches or length needed. Decrease 1 stitch at beginning of each row until 2 sts remain. Ch 3, fasten to 2nd st, (buttonhole). Sew strap in place and a button at opposite side.
