MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 4 balls of White or Ecru, or 6 balls of any color.

Steel crochet hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Material specified is sufficient for 4 place mats each about 12 x 18 inches, and a center mat about 14 x 28 inches.

GAUGE: 1 block measures 1 inch square. Use thread double throughout.

PLACE MAT (Make 4) ... Starting at long end, ch 69. 1st row: D tr in 6th ch from hook and the next 3 ch; * ch 5, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 5, skip 2 ch, d tr in next 5 ch (block). Repeat from * across (7 blocks and 6 lacets), ch 7, turn. 2nd row: Work sc in each ch-5 across with ch 7 between, ending with ch 7, sc in top st of turning ch. Ch 11, turn. 3rd row: Sc in 1st loop, * ch 5, block in next loop, ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 5, d tr at base of ch-7 on previous row. Ch 7, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. Continue thus in established pattern until 7 rows of blocks have been worked. Turn.

Next row: * Sl st in next 5 d tr of block, sc in sp, ch 5, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st in last 5 sts. Do not fasten off but work loops around all sides as follows: 1st rnd: With the right side facing, * ch 10, sc in center d tr of block, ch 10, sc in sp. Repeat from * across to next corner, sc in center d tr of block, ch 10, sc in corner st, ch 10, sc in same place (loop increased). Now work loops along short side (in the end d tr of each block and in each sp) to within next corner; inc 1 loop as before and continue thus around, ending with ch 10, sc in corner, ch 5, d tr in same place. 2nd rnd: * Ch 11, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, increasing 1 loop at each corner and forming the last loop by working ch 5 and 1 d tr. 3rd rnd: * Ch 12, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off.

CENTER MAT ... Starting at short end, ch 59. Work as for Place Mats, having 1 block and 1 lacet less on each row. Work 21 rows of blocks and continue working as for Place Mats. Fasten off. Starch and block to measurements given.
