Chef Potholder Pattern

MATERIALS: CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS PEARL COTTON, size 5, 2 balls each of Red and White.

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 1 skein of Black.

Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

GAUGE … 10 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch. With Red, ch 11. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each s c across to last s c. Then make a foundation s c as follows: Insert hook in last s c, draw loop through, thread over and draw through 1 loop (1 ch st made to be used as a foundation st for next s c): complete s c in usual manner. Insert hook in ch st and work as before. Make 1 more s c in usual way (2 s c increased). Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until there are 38 s c on row, ch 1 at end of last row. Now inc. 1 st at both ends of every other row until there are 56 s c on row—to inc. 1 s c, work 2 s c in 1 s c. Work straight until piece measures 4 inches. Fas­ten off Red. Attach White and continue until piece measures 7 inches in all, and ch 10 at end of last row. Next row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each s c across to last s c; make 9 foundation s c and 1 s c in usual way. Work straight over these 80 s c until piece measures 8½ inches in all. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this.

LOOP … With Red, ch 32. D c in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off.

Embroider features as in illustration, using Black Six Strand. Place padding between crocheted pieces and over-cast edges together, turning in corners of chef's hat. Sew loop in place.
