Hot Potholder Pattern

MATERIALS: CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS PEARL COTTON, size 5, 2 balls of any color.  

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 2 skeins of a contrasting color for trimming.

Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.

Starting at bottom, ch 64 (to measure about 7 inches). 1st row: 2 d c in 4th ch from hook, holding back on hook the last loop of each d c, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster made); * skip 2 ch, s c in next ch, ch 3, 2 d c in same place as s c, holding back on hook the last loop of each d c and complete a cluster as before. Repeat from * across, ending with s c. Turn. 2nd row: Ch 3, and complete a cluster in 1st s c as before; s c under ch-3 of next cluster, * ch 3 and complete a cluster in same place as last s c, s c under ch-3 of next cluster. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece is square. Fasten off.

CORD … Measure off 4 full strands of Six Strand, each 4½ yards long and twist tightly. Double these strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Trace the word "Hot" on paper and baste diagonally on crocheted piece. Sew cord over letters, drawing it through crocheted fabric whenever neces­sary. Line with fabric, having padding between cro­cheted piece and lining (for padding see patternbook page). Sew remainder of cord around edges, making a loop at one corner.
