MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 5, 8 balls of White or Ecru.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 2.
2 yards grosgrain ribbon, 1 inch wide.
Millinery wire.
Round elastic.
Use double thread throughout.
CROWN … Ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds. Place a marker in 1st st of each rnd to insure proper shaping. 2nd rnd: (Insert hook in next st and pull loop through) twice, thread over and draw through the 3 loops on hook (pattern st), sc in same place where last loop was pulled through (an increase). * Insert hook in same place as last sc and pull loop through, insert hook in next st and pull loop through, thread over and draw through the 3 loops on hook (pattern st), sc in same st where last loop was pulled through (another increase). Repeat from * around (12 sts). 3rd rnd: * Insert hook in same place as last sc and pull loop through, insert hook in next st and pull loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, insert hook in same place where last loop was pulled through and pull loop through, insert hook in next st and pull loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, sc in same place where last loop was pulled through (increase). Repeat from * around (18 sts). 4th rnd: * Insert hook in same place as last sc and pull loop through, insert hook in next st and pull loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ** insert hook in same place where last loop was pulled through and pull loop through, insert hook in next st and pull loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook. Repeat from ** once more, sc in same place where last loop was pulled through (increase). Repeat from * around (24 sts). Continue thus, increasing 6 sts evenly on each rnd until there are 96 sts on rnd. Work straight without increasing until piece measures 5 inches from start.
Continue for Brim as follows: 1st rnd: Increase as before in every 6th pattern st (112 sts). 2nd rnd: Increase as before in every 8th pattern st (126 sts). 3rd rnd: Work straight without increasing (126 sts). 4th rnd: Increase as before in every 9th pattern st (140 sts). 5th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd (140 sts). 6th rnd: Increase as before in every 10th pattern st (154 sts). 7th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd (154 sts). 8th rnd: Increase as before in every 11th pattern st (168 sts). 9th rnd: Increase as before in every 12th pattern st (182 sts). 10th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd (182 sts). 11th rnd: Increase as before in every 13th pattern st (196 sts). Do not fasten off.
Cut wire 2 inches longer than circumference of Brim. Overlap wire for 2 inches and sew securely. Now work 2 rows straight in pattern st. Fasten off. Lay wire on top of Brim and turn edge over it to cover it. Sew edge down. Attach thread just inside wired edge and work around in pattern st over wired edge (196 sts). On next rnd increase 14 sts as before (210 sts). Repeat last rnd (224 sts). Cut wire 2 inches longer than this new edge, overlap it and fasten as before. Work 2 rnds straight in pattern st. Fasten off. Finish this edge same as last wired edge.
Block hat. Sew a ribbon inside Crown for headband. Put a band around outside of Crown with a bow on right front. Sew elastic across back to fit.
