MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, size 5, 2 balls each of light and dark colors.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.
A bone ring.
Starting at bottom with Dark, ch 65. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 6 ch, thread over, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop dark color, make a loop of the light color and draw this loop through the remaining 2 loops on hook, thus joining new color. Then, working over Dark in order to conceal it, make dc in next 8 ch, thread over, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops, drop Light, pick up Dark and draw loop through. Now alternate groups of 9 Dark dc and 9 Light dc, changing colors as before and working over unused color until 7 groups in all (4 Dark and 3 Light) have been made. Do not carry Light across last Dark group. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Make Dark dc over Dark dc and Light dc over Light dc, counting turning ch at end of row as 1 dc. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Same as 2nd row, only this time carry Light while making last Dark group. With Light ch 3, turn.
These 3 rows complete 1 row of squares. Make another row of squares, having Light squares over Dark squares and vice versa. Continue thus, alternating squares until there are 7 rows of squares completed (4 Dark and 3 Light). Fasten off. Make another piece same as this. Place pad (see pattern book) between crocheted pieces and sew edges together. With Dark work sc closely over bone ring and sew ring at one corner.
