MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN
, 1 ball of Red.
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, 1 skein each of Green and Yellow.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.

Starting at the bottom, ch 4. 1st row: 5 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Sc and dc at base of ch (sc in next st, dc in next st) twice; sc and dc at top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn. 3rd row: Dc and sc at base of turning ch, then work dc in next sc and sc in next dc alternately across, ending with dc in last sc; sc, dc and sc at top of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: Sc and dc at base of turning ch, then work sc in next dc and dc in next sc alternately across, ending with sc in last dc, dc in top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows alternately for pattern, until piece measures 6 ¼ inches across, ending with 3rd row, then ch 4, turn.

Work straight in pattern as follows: 1st row: Sc in next dc, dc in next sc alternately across, ending with sc in last dc, dc in top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Dc in next sc, sc in next dc alternately across, ending with dc in last sc, sc in top of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 5 ¾ inches from beginning, ending with 2nd row. Ch 4, turn. Next row: (Insert hook in next st and draw loop through) twice; thread over and draw through the 3 loops on hook. Work in pattern across, ending with dc in last sc, ch 2, turn. Following row: (Insert hook in next st and draw loop through) twice; thread over and draw through the 3 loops on hook. Work in pattern across, ending with sc in last st. Ch 4, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 7 inches in all, ending with the 1st row. Ch 2, turn. Next row: Work as before across three quarters of last row. Ch 4, turn. Continue to work back and forth over this section only, decreasing at both ends of each row as before for 3 more rows. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this.

STEM . . . With Green Six Strand Embroidery Floss, ch 30. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Embroider one crocheted piece as in illustration. Leaves are worked in straight and outline stitches with Green. Seeds are embroidered in straight stitches with Yellow.

Place padding between two crochet pieces (for padding, see pattern book), and sew through both thicknesses around all edges. Sew on stem.
