Tweed Envelope Pattern #2052

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 10, Ecru, 4 balls, and size 30, White, 2 balls. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3. Four 2-inch wooden button molds. Slide fastener.

Begin at bottom of bag. With 1 strand of Ecru and 1 of White, ch 81. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, * 1 s c in next st, d c in next. Repeat from * along foundation ch. Into last st make 1 s c, 1 d c, 1 s c, 1 d c. Then repeat from * down other side of ch. Make 2 more sts in the end st and sl st to 3rd st of ch at beginning. From here on work around. 2nd rnd: Ch 2, s c into each d c and 1 d c into each s c of previous row. Repeat 2nd rnd, beginning the rows alternately with ch 3 and ch 2, until bag is desired depth. Fasten off.

Handles: Ch 125. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in front loop of each st across, ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in back loop of each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd. 5th row: Double the handle along top of 2nd row, and make a row of sl sts, catching back loops of 4th row and foundation ch. Fasten off.

Buttons: Ch. 3 Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 6 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: 1 s c and 1 d c in each s c of previous rnd. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, s c in next d c, d c in same d c, but instead of putting hook through the top loops of d c, put hook around the spoke of the d c of previous row. Repeat from * around. 4th and subsequent rnds: Work same as 3rd rnd, making s c in each s c, and s c in each d c, and a d c around each spoke. Make as many rnds as necessary to cover top of button. Put mold in this covering and s c in every other st until edges are brought together. Attach handles 3¼ inches out from center of bag, and 1¼ inches down from top. Cover ends with buttons. Sew in fastener and line bag.
