Roman Stripe Bag Pattern #2056

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 1 ball each of white, 9 Yellow, 68 Skipper Blue, and 2 balls of 126 Spanish Red; or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 3 balls of White, Yellow, and Blue, and 5 balls of Red. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 or 6. Two 12-inch long round wooden sticks.

With Red, make ch 24 inches long. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd to 18th rows incl: S c in each st across, ch 1, turn. Fasten off. Attach Yellow and work 16 rows of s c. Continuing with s c, work 16-row stripes of Blue, White, Red, Yellow, Blue, and White. Finish with 18 rows of Red.

Sew up sides. Turn in Red at ends and tack corner to bottom of bag. Place one stick near top of bag on one side, and fold top over stick. Whip in place with seam on outside of bag. Insert stick on other side and whip to correspond. This leaves ends free for gussets.

Spiral Handles: With Red, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring. S c in each st around. Work s c in s c until piece is 9 inches long. Make another, and sew to top of bag as in illustration.
