Handy Work Bag Pattern #2059

A bag of this type is most convenient to keep your leisure hour handiwork all together. Pockets may be made in the lining to make it even more useful.

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 61-A Dark Ecru, 3 balls, or J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 9 balls. Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand Floss, 4 skeins each of 81 Dark Brown, 9 Yellow and 91 Emerald Green. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5. Wooden stand.

Make ch one-fifth longer than width of stand. 1st row: Insert hook in 3rd ch from hook and draw through loop, * skip 1 st and draw loop through next st, thread over, draw through all loops on hook, ch 1, draw loop through same st, repeat from * across until work fits one side of frame. At end, omit last ch-1 and work s c in last st. Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: Draw loop through 3rd ch from hook, * draw loop through next ch-1, thread over, draw through all loops on hook, ch 1, draw loop through same ch st. Repeat from * across. At end, omit last ch-1 and make s c in last st. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until work measures 15 inches (or 4 inches less than double the depth desired). Then work a row of d c, keeping work flat, ch 3, turn. Next row: Work d c in d c across, ch 3, turn. Repeat this row until d c-band is 4 inches deep. Fasten off. Attach thread at foundation ch, and work a 4-inch band of d c to correspond to other end.

End sections: (Make 2). Make a ch about 6½ inches long, turn. Work same as beginning of bag until piece measures about 5 inches long or until piece fits lower section of bag. Then work a 4-inch band of d c's as before. Sew in end sections, making square effect across bottom of bag.

Over d c-band work cross-stitch pattern as follows: Between 1st and 2nd rows of d c, work cross stitches over 2 d c's with Brown. Work between 2nd and 3rd rows with Green. Alternate these two rows to top of bag. With Yellow, work dots over 2-d c groups between cross stitch rows.

Cut cardboard to fit bottom of bag to hold it square. Tack in. Line bag and sew to frame.
