MATERIALS: Chadwick's Red Heart Afghan Wool, 40 skeins (1 oz. skeins) of Cardinal Red and 31 skeins of White.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

Gauge: Each block measures about 5 inches between opposite corners.

BLOCK … With Red ch 5, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 19 tr in ring. Insert hook in 4th st of ch-4 first made, drop Red and draw White through, thus joining rnd. 2nd rnd: With White, make s c over each tr-bar, inserting hook between 2 sts from wrong side of work and bringing it out between following 2 sts; join. 3rd rnd: Ch 6 (to count as d c and ch-3); working with White over White sts, make d c in sl st (corner); * yarn over, insert hook in same st where last st was made, yarn over and draw through 2 loops; insert hook in next st, yarn over and draw loop through; yarn over and draw through 2 loops; yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Repeat from * 4 more times. In same st where last st was made, make d c, ch 3 and d c (corner). Work in this manner around. Join, dropping White and attaching Red.

4th rnd: ** In corner ch-3 make 2 s c, ch 2 and 2 s c; * insert hook under next bar and complete as for an s c; insert hook over next bar and complete as for an s c. Repeat from * 2 more times, insert hook under next bar. Repeat from ** around; join. 5th rnd: With Red ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in next st, * in corner sp make 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c; d c in next st, yarn over, insert hook in next st and pull loop through; yarn over and draw through 2 loops; (hereafter conceal unused color) drop Red, pick up White and draw through remaining 2 loops; d c in next 7 sts, drop White, pick up Red, d c in next 2 sts. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
   Make 276 blocks and sew together with over-and-over stitches on wrong side, arranging blocks as in chart.
