Columbia-Minerva Knitting Worsted (4 oz skein)-3 skeins each of Colors 2 and 3 and 2 skeins each of Colors 1 and 4 OR Nantuk 4 ply Knitting Yarn (Knitting Worsted size-2 or 4 oz skein)-12 ounces each of Colors 2 and 3 and 8 ounces each of Colors 1 and 4

1 "Boye" Crochet Hook "J" (Size 9)

Gauge: 3 dc to 1 inch, 2 rows to 1 ½ inches

ENTIRE AFGHAN IS CROCHETED IN ONE PIECE.

PATTERN STITCH: (Multiple of 22 chs, plus 14). Row 1-1 dc in 4th ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, *skip 3 chs, in next ch make a group of 4 clusters as follows: (yo, draw up a 1 inch loop) 3 times, yo and through all loops on hook, ch 1 to close (one cluster), ch 1, make 3 more clusters with ch 1 between in same ch, skip 3 chs, 1 dc in each of next 7 chs, 3 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 7 chs, repeat from * across row, ending skip 3 chs, 4 clusters in next ch, skip 3 chs, 1 dc in next ch, 2 dc in last ch, break off yarn, leaving loop on hook. Row 2-Draw new color through loop on hook, ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, *1 sc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in center ch 1 space, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch 1 space, 1 dc in each of next 17 dc, repeat from * across row, ending 1 sc in next ch 1 space, ch 1, (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in center ch 1 space, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch 1 space, 1 dc in each of last 2 dc, 1 dc in turning ch, ch 3, turn. Row 3-1 dc in same st as ch 3, 1 dc in next dc, *skip 1 dc, make a group of 4 clusters in center ch 2 space, skip next dc, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, 3 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc, repeat from * across row, ending skip 1 dc, make a group of 4 clusters in ch 2 space, skip 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in turning ch. Break off yarn, leaving loop on hook. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for pattern stitch.

AFGHAN: With Color 1 ch 146 loosely. Ch should measure about 48 inches. Work Row 1 of pat with Color 1, then repeat Rows 2 and 3 for pat, working color striping as follows: *2 rows Color 2, 2 rows Color 3, 2 rows Color 4, 2 rows Color 3, 2 rows Color 2, 2 rows Color 1. Repeat from * 5 times more, then work 2 rows Color 2, 2 rows Color 3, 2 rows Color 4, 2 rows Color 3, 2 rows Color 2 and 1 row of Color 1. Do not break yarn, but work border at side edge as follows: Ch 1, 2 sc over last dc, *ch 1, 2 sc over st at end of next row, repeat from * down side edge to foundation ch, break yarn and fasten. Attach Color 1 on right side of work at foundation ch and work border up other side edge in same manner. Break yarn and fasten.

FRINGE: Wind Color 3 over a 4th inch cardboard. Cut strands at one end. Cut strands of Color 2 in same manner. Fold and knot 4 strands of Color 3 with 2 strands of Color 2 in each of the 3 spaces of cluster groups at each end of Afghan.
