PATTERN STITCH … Make a chain the desired length and work as follows: 1st row: 2 tr in 5th ch from hook, ch 1, 3 tr in same ch; * skip 3 ch, sc in next ch, skip 3 ch, in next ch make 3 tr, ch 1 and 3 tr (2 shells made). Repeat from * across, ending row with skip 3 ch, sc in next ch, skip 3 ch, in next ch make 3 tr (a half shell). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * In back loop only of sc make a shell, sc in ch-1 of next shell. Repeat from * across, ending with 3 tr in top of turning ch. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for pattern.

2nd row: Sc in each sc across row. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece meas­ures ½". Make a buttonhole on the following row—to make a buttonhole, sc in 4 sc, ch 4, skip 4 sc, sc in next sc. Sc across row. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Work sc across row and 4 sc over the ch-4 of the preceding row. Sc across row. Continue to work in sc for each row until piece measures 1¼". Fasten off.

FINISHING … Press pieces lightly through damp cloth to measurements given. Sew shoulder, underarm and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in place. Sew blouse to waist band, easing in the full­ness. Sew center back seam of skirt to within 2½" of top. Gather skirt evenly at top, and sew to waist band. Sew 8 small buttons in place opposite button­holes.

If desired, make a casing inside of waist band, and run elastic through casing, adjusting to fit waist measurement.

CALOT

With main color, make a chain to meas­ure 21". Work tightly in pattern, making 40 shells. Work 2 rows with main color, then work 1 row of contrasting color and 1 row of main color alternately until 3 rows of contrasting color are worked (7 rows). Continue with main color until 15 rows in all are worked. Now dec as follows: 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows: Work back and forth over 7 shells. 4th row: Sl st over 1st shell and work over next 5 shells, turn. 5th and 6th rows: Work over 5 shells, turn. 7th row: Sl st over 1st shell and work over next 3 shells, turn. 8th and 9th rows: Work over 3 shells, turn. 10th row: Sl st over 1st shell. Work over 1 shell. Fasten off. * Return to 15th row of work, skip 1 shell, fasten thread and dec by repeat­ing 1st to 10th rows incl. Repeat from * 3 more times.

FINISHING … Press piece lightly through damp cloth. Sew back seam and sl st all points together.
