Starting at the bottom of dress with solid color and No. 8 hook, make a chain (11 ch sts to 1") to measure

55"
60"

1st row: Dc in 5th ch from hook, ch 2, dc in same place as last dc, * skip 2 ch, dc in next ch, skip 2 ch, in next ch make 2 dc with ch 2 between (shell made). Repeat from * across until row measures

48"
53"

ending with a shell. Join with sl st to top of turning ch at beginning of row, being careful not to twist work.

Work is now done in rnds. 2nd rnd: Draw up loop on hook to measure ¼", then make a cluster around turning ch as follows: * thread over hook, insert hook from right to left behind turning ch, bringing it out between turning ch and next dc and draw a loop through. Repeat from * 2 more times, thread over and draw through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1 (cluster made). ** Make shell in space of next shell, then make a cluster around bar of single dc between shells. Repeat from ** around. 3rd rnd: Work in same manner as for 2nd rnd, making cluster around cluster, and shell in space of shell. Repeat the 3rd rnd until piece measures in all

11½"
13"

Insert a marker for beginning of rnd.

To Shape Armholes: Work across for front, for

23"

from marker. Fasten off. Next row: Attach thread at marker and work same as last row. Fasten off. Repeat the last row until piece measures 1½" from beginning of armhole. Skip 4 shells with 3 clusters between for armhole, attach thread, and work back in same way, leaving opening for 2nd armhole to correspond.

Yoke … Starting at outer edge of Center Back opening, with shaded or variegated color, and No. 11 hook, make chain to measure about

32"
35"

1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each following ch across, decreasing 1 st after every

2½"
2¾"

until 10 sts have been decreased. (To dec a st work off 2 sts as 1.)

Now dc in each st across until outer (foundation) edge measures

28½"
31½"

Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn.

2nd row: Holding hook between thumb and forefinger of left hand, wind thread twice around left forefinger, insert hook in 1st dc and under both loops just wound around forefinger, thread over and draw loop through 1st dc (2 loops left on hook), thread over and draw through both loops on hook (a double-loop-sc made). Make a double-loop-sc in each st across. Ch 3, turn. Divide work into 6 equal sections and mark sections with pins. 3rd row: Dc in each st across, decreasing 2 sts on 1st section (back section), 5 sts on next section (this is shoulder), 2 sts in each of next 2 sections (Front), 5 sts in next section (other shoulder), and 2 sc in next section (other Back section)—18 sc decreased in all. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Make a double-loop-sc in each st across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows alternately until neck edge measures

12½"
14"

ending with 4th row. Loop background should measure 3" in depth. Work 1 row of sl sts along neck edge. Fasten off.

FINISHING … Press dress with hot iron through damp cloth. Shirr top of back and front, and sew to bottom of yoke as in illustration. Opening of yoke is at center back. Leave about 4" of yoke free at both sides for shoulders. Work 3 buttonloops at right side of back opening. Sew on ribbon rosette and buttons.

HAIR ORNAMENT (Loopy Rosettes) … With shaded or variegated color, and No. 11 hook, make a chain to measure 5 inches. Work as for yoke, omitting decreases, for 6 rows (3 loop rows). Fasten off. Make one more like this. Cut 3 8-inch lengths of ribbon for across head. Gather each rosette into a circle and sew them to ends of ribbon. Attach elastic (see illustration).
