Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "AUNT LYDIA'S" HEAVY RUG YARN, Article 235
2 skeins Steel Gray.
1 skein #302 Multicolor (Red, White, Gray, and Yellow) or colors of your choice.
Aluminum crochet hook size G.

Gauge: 7 s c = 2 inches. 3 rows = 1 inch.

HAT

CROWN: Starting at center with Steel Gray, ch 3, 6 s c in 2nd st from hook, drop Gray loop, always pull up a long loop at end of each round to be picked up at beginning of follow­ing rounds, attach Multi-color in 1st s c of 1st round. Here­after work in back loop only of each s c on every round.
2nd Round. 1 s c in same space, * 2 s c in next s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * all around, ending with 2 s c in last st, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.
3rd Round. * 2 s c in next s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * all around, ending with 2 s c in last st, drop Gray, pick up Multi-color loop.
4th Round. * 2 s c in next s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * all around, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.
5th Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around drop Gray, pick up Multi-color loop.
Next 6 Rounds. Continue working in same manner alternat­ing colors, increasing 7 s c evenly spaced on each round, not directly over increases of previous round (70 s c).
Next 5 Rounds. Work even alternating colors ending with the Multi-color round, sl st in last st, cut Multi-color yarn only.

BRIM: Pick up Gray loop, work 1 s c in each s c, do not join this or following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.
Next Round. S c in 1st s c, 2 s c in next s c, * s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.
Next 7 Rounds. Work even in s c.
Next Round. ** 1 s c in next s c, decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from * once, yarn over and work off all loops at one time), repeat from ** all around.
Work 1 round even, sl st in last st at end of round, cut yarn leaving a length for sewing. Turn brim under and sew last round to last Multi-color round on inside of hat.

TRIMMING: Cut 4 strands of Gray about 2 yards long. Twist tightly together. Double in half and let twist itself. Tack around crown as illustrated, leaving 1½ inches loose at each end. Trim evenly.

BAG

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "AUNT LYDIA'S" HEAVY RUG YARN, Article 235
2 skeins Steel Gray.
2 skeins #302 Multicolor (Red, White, Gray, and Yellow) or colors of your choice.
Aluminum crochet hook size G.

Gauge: 7 s c = 2 inches; 3 rows = 1 inch.

With Steel Gray, ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, do not join this or the following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round. Hereafter work in back loop only of each s c in every round, drop Steel Gray loop, attach Multi-color in 1st s c of 1st round.
2nd Round. With Multi-color work 2 s c in each s c, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.
3rd Round. * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around, drop Gray, pick up Multi-color loop.
4th Round. * 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, repeat from * all around, drop Multi-color, pick up Gray loop.
Next 6 Rounds. Continue working in same manner alternat­ing colors and increasing 8 s c evenly spaced in each round, not directly over increases of previous round (80 s c). Continue in same manner without increases until side meas­ures 7 inches from last increased round, ending with Multi­color round, sl st in next 2 sts to even round, cut Multi-color yarn.

BEADING: Working through both loops of sts, pick up Gray loop, s c in next s c, ch 5, skip 1 st, tr c in next st, * ch 1, skip 1 st, tr c in next st, repeat from * all around ending with ch 1, join in 4th st of ch 5.
Next Round. Ch 1, s c in same space, then work 1 s c in each mesh and 1 s c in each tr c, do not join this or follow­ing rounds. Working in back loop of sts work 3 rounds even, sl st in next 2 sts to even round.

EDGING: * Ch 4, sl st in same st, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, sl st in next s c, repeat from * all around, join in sl st, cut yarn.

DRAW STRING: With Gray crochet a chain about 30 inches long, sl st in 2nd st from hook, 1 sl st in each remain­ing st of ch, cut yarn. Work another string in same manner. Lace through beading, lacing over 1 tr c and under next tr c. Lace other string in same manner starting at opposite side. Knot ends together. Cut a cardboard or buckram circle to fit bottom of bag and insert in bag.
