Hot Plate Mats Pattern

These hot plate mats, with looped chains formed in high ridges, hold hot dishes up and away from the table. Practical in white for formal settings, they are shown with alternate loops in color on a white background, but may be made to match colored tablecloths or dishes; with ridges in contrasting shades.

Material:—A set may be as pictured; or all oval; or all round. The 3 mats shown will take 2 balls or 6 skeins of Enterprise Yarn if all white. 50 yards of color will make alternate loops in color.
Add rows and ridges to the desired size for larger dishes.

Large Mat: (6½ x 10½). With White, ch 18, sk last 3 sts, 8 dc in next st, dc in next 13 sts, 9 dc in next (end) st, dc in next 13 sts on opposite side of ch, sl st to top of 3-ch, ch 5, drop in front of work, do not cut.
Row 2: Each sc in this and all loop rows are worked in front loop of dc, all ch 5 are dropped in front of work, when color is picked up. Additional loops are placed behind loop previously made. This will not be men­tioned again. Join color to next dc, ch 5 and drop, do not cut, * pick up white—be careful to keep chs untwisted—sc in next dc, ch 5 and drop, pick up color, sc in next dc, ch 5 and drop, repeat from * 3 times. ** Pick up white, sc in next second dc, ch 5 and drop, pick up color, sc in next second dc, ch 5, and drop. Repeat from ** twice. Pick up white, sc in next dc, ch 5 and drop, pick up color, sc in next dc, ch 5 and drop. Repeat from * to end of row. Join final loops of each color with sl st to base of first loop of same color, behind color last dropped. Fasten off color. With white ch 1.
Row 3: Working behind loops of last row into back loops of dc of previous row, sc in ch-3 of previous dc row, 2 sc in next 8 dc, sc in next 13 dc, 2 sc in next 9 dc, sc in 13 dc, sl st to ch-1.
Row 4: Ch 3, working thru both loops of sc, * (dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc) 3 times. (2 dc in next sc) twice, dc in next sc, (2 dc in next sc) twice, (dc in next sc, 2, dc in next) twice, dc in next 16 sc. Repeat from * to end of row. Sl st in ch-3, ch 5 and drop.
Row 5: (Similar to Row 2). Join color to next second dc, ch 5, drop. * Pick up white, sc in second dc, ch 5, drop, pick up color, sc in next second dc, ch 5, drop. Repeat from * to end, finish as Row 2. Fasten off color. With white ch 1.
Row 6: Sc in back loop of each dc of previous row. Sl st to ch-1. (79 sc.)
Row 7: Ch 3, work thru both loops of sc, *(dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc) 12 times, dc in next 16 sc. Repeat from * to end. Sl st to ch-3, ch 5, drop. Repeat Rows 5 and 6.
Row 10: Ch 3, work thru both loops, *(dc in next 3 sc, 2 dc in next sc) 4 times, (2 dc in next sc) twice, dc in next sc, (2 dc in next sc) 3 times, (dc in 3 sc, 2 dc in next sc) 3 times, dc in next 18 sc. Repeat from * to end. Sl st to ch-3, ch 5, drop. Repeat Rows 5 and 6.
Row 13: Ch 3, *(dc in next 3 sc, 2 dc in next) 6 times, dc in next sc, 2 dc in next, (dc in next 3 sc, 2 dc in next) 5 times, dc in next 18 sc. Repeat from * to end. Repeat Row 5 and fasten off ends.

Medium Mat: (8½ x 5½ in.) Work same as large mat thru Row 11. Fasten off.
Round Mat: (6 inches). With white, ch 6, sl st to form ring. Ch 1, 11 sc in ring, sl st in ch-1.
Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same ch-1, (3 dc in back loop of next sc) 11 times, join with sl st to ch-3, ch 5 and drop (36 dc). Repeat Row 5 of large Mat.
Row 4: Sc in top of ch-3 in previous dc row, (sc in back loop of next 3 dc, 2 sc in next dc) repeat to end. Sl st to ch-1.
Row 5: Ch 3, dc in same ch-1, (dc in both loops of next 2 sc, 2 dc in next sc) repeat around. Sl st to ch-3, ch 5 and drop (60 dc). Repeat Row 5 of Large Mat. Pick up white and repeat Row 6 of Large Mat and Row 5 of this mat (80 dc). Repeat Row 5 of Large Mat.
Row 10: Sc in same st with sl st, (sc in back loops of next 7 dc, 2 sc in next dc). Repeat around. Sl st to ch-1.
Row 11: Ch 3, dc in same ch-1, (dc in next 4 sc, 2 dc in next) repeat around (108 dc). Sl st in ch-3. Ch 5 and drop. Repeat Row 5 of Large Mat. Fasten off.
