Duck Toy Pattern

Soft, Cuddly "Sleepy Time" Toys will replace factory mades that are hard to get. To be crocheted of washable Enterprise Cotton Yarn and stuffed with cotton or other soft materials • just the thing for a sleepy child to take to bed • so soft they can be rolled upon and do no harm.

Complete row by row instructions as far as needed are given— then follow the chart.

Crocheted in Puff Stitch, these toys are firm—durable and, if tightly crocheted, will not stretch.

TO FOLLOW CHARTS IN PUFF STITCH

The charts show layout of puffs to be followed to make all of these toys. Puff Stitch is simple to do—read the first 3 rows of Humpty Dumpty Doll instructions. Following any of the charts, row after row are crocheted in the same manner. Each square on the chart is a puff stitch.

Diagonal lines that form curved edges indicate increases (as in Row 10 of Humpty Dumpty Doll instructions) or decreases. To decrease at beginning of rows, sk last sc, dc in next sc,—hold final loop of it on hook, draw up loop in next st, thread over and thru all 3 loops on hook at once.

To find number of ch sts to start—count 2 chs for each puff, plus 2 and add an extra ch for each increase on starting edge; i. e. chart for starting edge at top of Jumbo Elephant Toy shows 7 puffs and 2 increases—7 x 2 + 2 = 16 and add 1 ch for each increase = 18 ch on starting chain.

Make two side pieces for each toy so that wrong sides may be placed together in same positions.

You can lay out your own ideas on cross section paper to be crocheted in the same manner for other toys.

DUCK TOY

MATERIALS: 3 balls Ivory—1 ball trim color.
Size—approximately 10" high.

The duck starts at top of head on chart, ch 10 in Ivory, 9 sc on ch. Start first puff row at left of chart with an inc (as in Row 10 of Humpty Dumpty), then make 3 puffs and an inc. Work sc and puff rows alternately and follow chart to complete body. Join Ivory on wrong side of work in 12th st from outer edge of body to start tail. Work a dec and 4 puffs in first row.

BASE: After completing sides, join color thru 2 loops of last sc in last puff row of body, turn, sk 1 st, sc in next 14 sts, 2 sc in next, * ch 2, turn, sk 1 of ch, sc in each st, 2 sc in end st (18 sc). Repeat from * once. ** Ch 1, turn, sk 1, sc in each st to within 2 sts of end, draw up loop in each of 2 sts, over and thru all 3 loops on hook. Repeat from ** and fasten off.

BILL: With color, ch 11, 10 sc on ch. * Ch 2, turn, sk 1 st of ch, sc in each st, 2 sc in end st. Repeat from *. Ch 2, sk 1, sc in each st to within 2 sts of end, draw up loop in each of next 2 sts and draw thru all 3 loops on hook. Ch 1, turn, sl st in last 4 sts, sc in next 10. Ch 1, turn, sk 1, sc in next 6 sts, draw up loop in next 2, over and thru 3 loops. Ch 1, turn, sk 1, sl st in next, sc in next 3, draw up loop in next 2, take off together. Ch 1, turn, sk 1, work next 2 off together. Fasten off. Lap bill over edge and stitch firmly to head as illustrated.

INSET: With Ivory, ch 10, 9 sc on ch and work 4 puffs wide to length needed to sew to one side from base to bill, break Ivory, join color thru 2 loops of last sc of puff row, turn, work over ends, sc in 9 sts. * Ch 1, turn, sc in last 7 sc, draw up in next 2, over and thru 3 loops at once. Repeat from * until 3 sts remain, work on 3 sts for 14 rows. Then work 2 sc in last st of every row, until there are 9 sc. Stitch to edge of bill, join Ivory, fasten off color, work inset of Ivory for length to sew to side, over head, around tail to base, join color and work across 9 sc for 34 rows, sew to base, sew ends of inset. Sew other side piece to opposite edge of inset, matching colors. Leave opening for stuffing, stuff firmly and close.
