Butterfly Insertion Pattern

Shaded Yellows and Green or Colors Desired

Body. With Green ch 3, 3 d c in 3rd st from hook, ch 1, turn.
2nd Row. 1 s c in each st (4 s c), ch 1, turn.
3rd Row. 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, ch 1, turn.
4th Row. 1 s c in each s c. Repeat the last row 13 times.
Next Row. Decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of row (4 s c), ch 2, turn.
Next Row. * Thread over hook, insert in next s c, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * twice, thread over and pull through all loops at one time, ch 28 for feeler, insert hook in 2nd st from hook, pull loop through, * insert hook in next st of ch, pull loop through, repeat from * twice, thread over and pull through all loops at one time, break thread leaving an end, thread into needle and fasten securely. Attach thread in same space on head and work another feeler in same manner. Attach Shaded Yellows in 8th row from lower edge of body, * ch 5, skip 1 row, s c in next row, repeat from * 3 times (4 loops), ch 5, turn.
2nd Row. 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c in 1st loop, ch 4, skip 1 loop, 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c (shell) in next loop, ch 1, shell in next loop, ch 5, turn.
3rd Row. Shell in center of 1st shell, ch 5, skip the ch 1 loop, shell in center of next shell, ch 3, 7 d c over next loop, ch 3, shell in center of next shell, ch 5, turn.
4th Row. Shell in center of shell, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 7 d c with ch 1 between each d c, ch 3, shell in center of next shell, ch 4, s c in next loop, ch 4, shell in shell, ch 5, turn.
5th Row. Shell in shell, ch 5, s c in next s c, ch 5, shell in next shell, ch 4, s c between 1st 2 d c, * ch 3, s c between next 2 d c, repeat from * 4 times, ch 4, shell in next shell, ch 5, turn.
6th Row. Shell in shell, ch 6, skip 1 loop, s c in next loop, * ch 3, s c in next loop, repeat from * 3 times, ch 6, 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c, ch 3, 3 d c in center of next shell, ch 6, s c in next s c, ch 6, shell in shell, ch 5, turn.
7th Row. Shell in shell, ch 6, s c in next s c, ch 6, skip 1 loop, shell in next ch 3 loop, ch 5, turn.
8th Row. 6 d c in center of 1st shell, 6 d c in center of next shell, ch 1, turn.
Next Row. 1 s c in each of the 12 d c, break thread, this completes lower wing.
Attach thread in 1st free ch 3 loop of 6th row next to lower wing, ch 5, shell in same loop, ch 7, s c in 1st ch 3 loop, * ch 3, s c in next loop, repeat from * twice, ch 7, shell in next shell, ch 5, turn.
Next Row. Shell in 1st shell, ch 7, s c in 1st ch 3 loop, * ch 3, s c in next loop, repeat from * once, ch 7, shell in next shell, ch 5, turn.
Next Row. Shell in 1st shell, ch 7, s c in 1st ch 3 loop, ch 3, s c in next loop, ch 7, shell in next shell, ch 5, turn.
Next Row. Shell in 1st shell, ch 7, s c in ch 3 loop, ch 7, shell in next shell, ch 5, turn.
Next Row. 6 d c in center of 1st shell, 6 d c in center of next shell, ch 1, turn and work 1 s c in each of the next 12 d c, break thread.
Attach thread in same place on opposite side of body and work other two wings in same manner.
Applique Butterfly to corner of handkerchief as illus­trated. Cut away material from underneath butterfly.
Edge. Attach Shaded Yellows at wing of butterfly, * ch 4, skip 2 hemstitched spaces, 2 d c in next space, ch 3, sl st in top of last d c for picot, d c in same space, ch 4, skip 2 spaces, s c in next space, repeat from * all around to opposite wing of butterfly, break thread.
