Three Little Maids Potholder Pattern #9074

MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball each of Light Ecru, Brown and Yellow.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 6 skeins of Black, 2 skeins of Yellow and 1 skein each of Red, Blue and White.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
5 bone rings.
3 screw hooks.

No. 9074-A (center)

Front … Starting at center, with Light Ecru ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * S c in each of 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. Continue thus, increasing as necessary to keep work flat, until piece measures 5¾ inches in diameter. Then work 2 rnds without increasing. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this for back.

Lower Lip … With full strand of Red ch 8; s c in 2nd ch from hook, half d c in next, d c in next, tr in next d c in next, half d c in next, s c in next. Fasten off.

Upper Lip … Ch 10, s c in 2nd ch from hook, half d c in next, d c in next, tr in next, d c in next, tr in next, d c in next, half d c in next, s c in next. Fasten off.

Eyes … With Blue work as for front to end of 3rd rnd. Fasten off.
   Look at illustration and sew eyes and lips on front. With Black work blanket stitch around eyes, for lashes. Embroider nostrils in lazy daisy stitch with Black.

Hair … With Yellow Six Strand make a chain 18 inches long. Attach another full strand and, using both full strands, work s c in 2nd ch from hook, * pull loop on hook out 1 inch; holding loop in place with fore­finger of right hand, make another s c in same ch; pull loop out 1 inch; holding loop in place with forefinger of right hand, make s c in next ch. Repeat from * across. Fasten off. Sew hair in place across top of face. Tack pad (see patternbook page) to back. Sew back and front together with over-and-over stitches all around outside edge. Sew bone ring securely to back at top.

No. 9074-B (top)

Front and Back … With Brown work as for front and back of No. 9074-A.

Lower Lip … With full strand of Red ch 16; s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in next, half d c in next, d c in each of 3 ch, tr in each of 3 ch, d c in each of 3 ch, half d c in next, s c in each of 2 ch. Fasten off.

Upper Lip … Ch 20, s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in next half d c in next, d c in each of 2 ch, tr in each of 2 ch, d c in each of 2 ch, half d c in next, d c in each of 2 ch tr in each of 2 ch, d c in each of 2 ch, half d c in next's c in each of 2 ch. Fasten off.

Teeth … With White ch 16, d c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across. Fasten off.

Eyeballs … With White work as for front to end of 4th rnd. Fasten off.

Pupils … With Black work as for front to end of 2nd rnd. Fasten off.
   Look at illustration and sew eyeballs in place. Sew pupils on top of eyeballs. Sew teeth and lips in place, having lips overlap teeth. With Black work a row of blanket stitch around eyeballs. Embroider nostrils with lazy daisy stitch in Red.

Braid … Make a braid, using 3 full skeins of Black. Tie securely 1 inch up from each end, and make a bow, using Red. Sew braid in place across top of face, mak­ing a loop of braid in center of forehead. Finish as for No. 9074-A.

No. 9074-C (bottom)

Front and Back … With Yellow work as for front and back of No. 9074-A.

Lower Lip … Work as for lower lip of 9074-A.

Upper Lip … Ch 12; s c in 2nd ch from hook, half d c in next, d c in next, tr in each of next 2 ch, d c in next, tr in each of next 2 ch, d c in next, half d c in next, s c in next. Fasten off.

Eyes … With Black ch 5, s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each of 2 ch, 5 s c in last ch; then work along oppo­site side of foundation chain, making s c in each ch. Fasten off.
   Look at illustration and sew eyes and lips on front. With Black work a row of back stitch around eyes, slanting outer points upward. Embroider nostrils in Black with back stitch.

Bangs … Cut a strip of cardboard 6 inches long and 1½ inches wide. Wind a full skein of Black around the width of cardboard; with a full strand of Black (left over from embroidery) make an s c by inserting hook through 1 loop, drawing loop through, threading over hook and drawing through both loops on hook. Con­tinue in this manner until all thread on cardboard is used up. Fasten off.
   Sew bangs in place across top of face, keeping bangs flat. Make a braid, using 1 full skein of Black, and sew in place across top of bangs, having a 1-inch loop at one end and allowing other end to fall free in a pig­tail. Tie end of pigtail with Blue.

Rosette … With Blue ch 6, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 4, * d c in ring, ch 1. Repeat from * 6 more times. Join to 3rd st of ch-4 first made. 2nd rnd: In each sp make s c, half d c, 3 d c, half d c, s c. Fasten off. Sew rosette to face at looped end of braid. Finish as for No. 9074-A.

No. 9074-D

Holder … This is a square piece, folded to form a triangle. Starting at center, with Yellow ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * S c in each of 5 s c, 3 s c in next s c. Repeat from * 3 more times. 5th rnd: * S c in each s c to within center s c of 3-s c group, 3 s c in center s c. Repeat from * around. Repeat 5th rnd until piece is about 2 inches square. Break off Yellow, attach Brown and continue as before until piece is 5 inches square. Break off Brown, attach Ecru and continue as before until piece is 8 inches square. Fasten off. Fold in half. Cut a triangle from heavy cardboard or soft wood, 8 inches on 2 sides and 11 inches on 1 side, and insert between the folded piece of crochet. Sew open edges together. Fasten rings to back at both ends of longest side. Screw hooks at each point and hang holders.
