Fan Bag Pattern

Materials:
HIAWATHA Super Crepe Corde Art. 42, 5 tubes or
HIAWATHA Super Twist Rayon Cord Art. 41, 4 tubes
Steel crochet hook No. 0 or bone crochet hook No. 3
8" TALON Slide Fastener Style 148 (available at all notion counters)
HIAWATHA Lining Material and Buckram Art. H-113
HIAWATHA Lucite Clasp No. 6215

FRONT
Center section. Starting at top, make a chain 10" long.
1st row—Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw up a loop, insert hook in next ch and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1, * draw up a loop in each of next 2 ch, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row—* Draw up a loop in next st and in next ch, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Repeat from * across. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 3", then decrease 1 st at beginning of each row until piece measures 5". Fasten off.
Attach corde at top edge and work 61 sc around side and bottom edges. Ch 1, turn.
Shell section. 1st row—Sc in 1st sc, * 5 dc in next st (shell), sc in next st. Repeat from * around, ending with sc in last sc (30 shells). Ch 3, turn.
2nd row—2 dc at base of ch-3, * sc in cen­ter dc of next shell, 5 dc in back loop of next sc. Repeat from * around ending with 3 dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row—Sc in top of last dc, * shell in back loop of next sc, sc in center of next shell. Repeat from * across ending with sc at top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until there are 7 rows of shells in all. Fasten off.

BACK
Work center section same as Front. Fasten off. Attach corde to top of center section, then working along other side of founda­tion chain for flap, work in pattern across. Ch 1, turn. Continue to work in pattern, decreasing 1 st at end of each row until flap measures 2".
Next row—Work in pattern to 2" beyond center of row. Turn.
Following row—Skip 1 st, work in pattern across the center 3¾" of flap only. Turn. Continue to work on center section only, decreasing 1 st at beginning of each row, until flap measures 3¼" in all. Fasten off.
Attach corde at one end of starting chain. Work 1 row of sc around, then work shells as on Front.

FINISHING
Before joining cut linings and interlining, following directions in kit H-113. Sew to­gether last row of shells of front and back pieces and sew together across top edges of shell sections at both sides of bag. Make outer lining and interlining, insert in crocheted bag, then attach clasp. Make inner lining (with slide fastener), then sew all linings into place.
