Steel crochet hook No. 1

Gauge: 5 sc = 1"

CROWN—Work same as Crown of Wide Brimmed Hat. End off.

FLOWERS (make 14)—With T ch 8, to measure 1½". Sl st in 1st ch, forming a ring. Rnd 1—Ch 1, 16 sc in ring, sl st in 1st sc. Rnd 2Work loosely—* Ch 4, thread over, draw up a loop in next sc, over and through 2 loops—unfinished dc made—work 4 more unfinished dc in same place, over and through all 6 loops on hook—cluster made—ch 3, sl st in top of cluster, ch 4, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (8 petals). End off.

Finishing—Sew buttons at even intervals around hat, ½" from lower edge. Slip a flower over each button.

Gauge: (double strand) 4 sc = 1"

BOTTOMInside—With double strand of M and No. 00 hook ch 17, to measure 4¼". Work tightly. Rnd 1—4 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 14 ch, 4 sc in last ch, continuing along other side work sc in each of next 14 ch. Mark beg of rnds. Rnd 2—* 2 sc in each of next 4 sc, sc in each of next 14 sc. Repeat from * once more. Rnd 3—* (2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc) 4 times; sc in next 14 sc. Repeat from * once more (8 incs in rnd, 4 at each end). Rnd 4, 5 and 6—Inc 4 sc evenly around each end (not directly over incs of previous rnd). Rnd 7—Sc in each sc (76 sc). Sl st in next st. End off. Piece should measure 3" x 7". Outside—Same as Inside but do not end off (be sure both pieces have same number of sts).

SIDE—With double strand of M, working through back loops only of Outside and both loops of Inside, and inserting base, work sc in each sc around, thus joining. Through both loops work 1 rnd sc inc 4 sts (80 sts). Work even until Side measures 4½" ending at center of one short end. Sl st in next st. End off 1 strand.

TOPRnd 1—With single strand and No. 1 hook ch 3, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 2, * thread over, draw up a loop in same place, over and through 2 loops, thread over, skip 1 sc, draw up a loop in next sc, over and through 2 loops, over and through all 3 loops on hook—cluster made—ch 2. Repeat from * around, end­ing last cluster in same place as sl st, ch 2, sl st in top of ch-3 (40 clusters). Rnd 2—Ch 3, dc in top of next cluster, ch 2, * thread over, draw up a loop in same place, over and through 2 loops, thread over, draw up a loop in top of next cluster, complete cluster as before, ch 2. Repeat from * around, ending same as rnd 1. Join. Repeat rnd 2 until cluster section is 5" deep. Beading—Ch 7, * dtr in next cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * around, join last ch-2 with sl st in 5th ch of ch-7. Edging—Ch 1, * sc in next space, ch 3, sc in same space. Repeat from * around. Join and end off.

FLOWERS (make 14)—Same as on Hat.

DRAWSTRINGS (make 2)—With single strand ch 24". Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, continuing along other side, work sl st in each ch. End off, leaving 8" end.

Finishing—Sew buttons at even intervals around Bag, on next to last rnd of sc. Run drawstrings through beading. Sew ends of each drawstring together, careful not to twist. Sew button at end of each drawstring. Slip a flower over each button.
