Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2 and 4.

With No. 4 hook, ch 144 to measure 20 inches, turn. 1st row: With No. 2 hook, d c in 4th ch from hook, * 2 d c in next ch, 1 d c in next ch, repeat from * across (208 d c in all), ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 1 d c in each d c across, ch 4, turn.

3rd row: 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, * 1 knot st, skip 2 d c, 1 s c in next st, 1 knot st, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, skip 2 sts, 2 d c in next d c, ch 2, 2 d c in same st, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 2 d c, repeat from * across, ending row with 1 d c in each of last 5 sts, ch 4, turn.

4th row: 1 d c in each of 1st 4 d c, * 1 knot st, s c in same st as last d c, 2 knot sts, (a dou­ble knot st) s c in next d c. 1 knot st, 1 d c in same st as last s c was made, 1 d c in next d c, skip 2 d c. Under next ch-2 make: 2 d c, ch 2, 2 d c. Skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 2 d c, repeat from * end­ing row to correspond with begin­ning. Ch 4, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row, making s c's over double loop on each side of center knot of double knot sts. 6th row: Same as 4th row. 7th row: 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, * 2 knot sts, s c over double loop on each side of center knot of double knot st, 2 knot sts, d c in each of next 2 d c, skip 2 d c, 2 d c under ch-2, ch 2, 2 d c under same ch-2, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 2 d c and repeat from * across. Neckband—1st row: Attach thread to foundation ch and working on opposite side of ch with No. 4 hook make 1 s c before and 1 s c after each single d c. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 1 d c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in each d c. Ch 3, turn. 4th to 13th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately. Work s c's around the 2 short ends, keeping work flat. Fasten collar at back with 5 buttons.
