Milward's steel crochet hook No. 14.

Completed doily measures about 10 inches in diameter.

MOTIF … Ch 10, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 7 (to count as d c and ch-4), * d c in ring, ch 4. Repeat from * 4 more times. Sl st in 3rd st of ch-7 first made (6 sps). 2nd rnd: In each sp around make s c, half d c, 5 d c, half d c and s c. Sl st in sl st (6 petals). 3rd rnd: * Ch 5, insert hook between next 2 petals from back of work and bring it out in following sp; thread over and draw loop through; thread over and draw through both loops on hook. Repeat from * 5 more times. 4th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd, making 7 d c (instead of 5 d c) in center part of each petal. 5th rnd: Same as 3rd rnd. 6th rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 11 d c in next ch-5 loop, 12 d c in each loop around. Sl st in 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 7th rnd: Ch 11 (to count as tr and ch-7), skip 5 d c, tr between this and next d c (5th and 6th d c), * ch 7, skip 6 d c, tr between this and next d c (6th and 7th d c). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 7, sl st in 4th ch of ch-11 first made (12 sps). 8th rnd: Ch 1, * 9 s c in sp, s c in next tr. Repeat from * around; join. 9th rnd: Ch 12, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; sl st in sl st. * Ch 5, turn, skip 2 sts, d c in next st; (ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st) 3 times. Repeat from * 3 more times (a square completed). ** Ch 11, s c in s c directly over next tr below, ch 5, turn; skip 2 sts, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st and complete a square as before. Repeat from ** around (12 squares). Join with sl st to tip of first ch-12 made. 10th rnd: * 2 s c in next sp, s c in next st, 2 s c in next sp, s c in next st, ch 3, s c in 3rd ch from hook (p); 2 s c in next sp, s c in next st, 3 s c in next sp, p, 2 s c in same sp, s c in next st, 2 s c in next sp, s c in next st, p, 2 s c in next sp, s c in next st, 2 s c in next sp.    Make 6 more motifs. Place these 6 motifs around 1st motif, and sew together 2 points of each motif to 2 points of center motif. Join adjacent motifs at 2 corresponding points in same manner.
