Set consists of 4 place mats, each about 12½ x 16 inches, and a center mat about 16 x 30 inches.

Gauge: 9 sts make 1 inch; 3 s c-rows and 2 tr-rows make 1 inch.

PLACE MATS (Make 4) … Starting at solid section, make a 15-inch chain (9 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook and in each ch across until there are 108 tr, counting turning ch as 1 tr (about 12 inches). Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each tr across. Ch 4 (to count as 1st tr of next row), turn. 3rd row: Tr in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 8½ inches, ending with an s c-row. Do not break off. Work s c along remaining 3 sides, making 3 s c at corners; join with sl st. Sl st in next 2 s c and work border as follows:
1st rnd: Ch 5; make 2 d tr at base of ch-5, retaining on hook last loop of each d tr; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster). * Skip 6 s c; 2 d tr in next s c, retaining on hook last loop of each d tr; thread over and draw through all loops on hook; ch 5, s c where last 2 d tr were made (another cluster); ch 5 and complete a cluster as before at base of this ch-5. Repeat from * around, working an extra cluster-group at each corner to keep following rows flat. Join ch-5 of last cluster with sl st to base of 1st cluster. 2nd rnd: Sl st in each st of ch-5 of 1st cluster, s c at tip of 2-cluster group, ch 5, d tr in same place as last s c. * Ch 5, s c at base of this tr (thus completing cluster), ch 5, complete cluster as on previous row with 2 d tr at base of ch-5; 2 d tr (worked off as 1 st) at tip of next cluster-group. Repeat from * around; join last cluster to tip of 1st one with an s c. 3rd rnd: * Ch 5, s c in last s c made; ch 12, s c between next 2 joined clusters. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-12 to base of 1st ch-5. 4th rnd: Sl st in ch-5 loop, ch 5. Make 2 d tr (worked off as 1 st) to complete beginning cluster. * Ch 5, s c in 3rd st from hook (thus making ch-2 and p), ch 2, make 3-d tr cluster in same loop by working off 3 d tr as 1 st and making ch-1 to fasten cluster. Repeat from * once (this is corner loop). ** S c in next ch-12 loop, ch 1; in next ch-5 loop make two 3-d tr clusters separated by (ch-2, p and ch-2). Repeat from ** around, making 3 clusters in the 2 corner loops to keep work flat. Fasten off.

CENTER MAT … Work solid section exactly as for place mats, but work for 26 (instead of 8½) inches. Then work cluster edging all around.
