FIRST STRIP. First Motif … Starting at center, make a ring by winding thread around forefinger 10 times. 1st rnd: 42 s c in ring; join. 2nd rnd: * Ch 9, skip 6 s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * 5 more times (6 loops). 3rd rnd: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 2 tr in s c at base of ch-4 just made, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster), * ch 5, in next ch-9 loop make s c, ch 5 and s c; ch 5, 3 tr in next s c, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (another cluster). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st at tip of 1st cluster made. 4th rnd: Ch 4, 2-tr cluster at tip of 1st cluster, ch 5, a 3-tr cluster in same place as last cluster, * ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 5; in tip of next cluster make 2 clusters with ch-5 between. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 5, sl st in tip of 1st cluster. Fasten off. This completes one motif.

Second Motif … Work 1st 3 rnds as for 1st motif. 4th rnd: Ch 4, 2-tr cluster at tip of 1st cluster, ch 5, cluster in same place as last cluster, ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 5, cluster in tip of next cluster, ch 2, s c in 3rd st of any ch-5 between clusters on 1st motif, ch 2, cluster in same place as last cluster on 2nd motif, ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 5, cluster in tip of next cluster, ch 2, s c in next ch-5 between clusters on 1st motif, ch 2, cluster in same place as last cluster on 2nd motif, and complete rnd as for 1st motif. Make another motif and join to previous one as 2nd was joined to 1st. This completes first strip.

SECOND STRIP. First Motif … Work as before, joining two points to 1st 2 free points to the right of joining at lower edge of 1st motif of 1st strip.

Second Motif … Work as before, joining 1st point to 1st free point next to joining on 1st motif of 2nd strip; join next point in same place where joining of 1st motif was made; join next point in same place as the joining between 1st and 2nd motifs of 1st strip, and the following point to next free point of 2nd motif of 1st strip. Complete rnd and fasten off.

Continue thus until there are 4 motifs on 2nd strip, joining as before. Make 5 motifs for third strip, 4 motifs for fourth strip and 3 motifs for fifth strip, joining as before.
