Canterbury Bell Curtain Edging & Insertion Pattern

MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, 2 balls of Dark Yellow (No. 43) and 1 ball each of Spanish Red (No. 126) and China Blue (No. 76).
J. & P. Coats Tatting-Crochet, Size 70, 2 balls of Hunter's Green (No. 48).
Steel Crochet Hook No. 10.
1 pair of kitchen curtains.

EDGING (for Left Panel)FLOWER … Starting at top with Red, ch 5. 1st row: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, 3 dc in next ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in first dc, dc in each dc across, 2 dc in turning chain. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in turning chain. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: Picking up front loop only and holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, make tr in first dc, tr in next dc; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (tr-cluster made), ch 4, sl st in same dc as last tr was made, ch 4, make a 4-tr cluster over next 4 dc, ch 4, sl st in next dc, ch 4, make a 2-tr cluster by making tr in same dc as sl st, tr in turning chain, ch 4, sl st in turning chain. Break off.

CENTER … Attach Yellow to first free back loop on 3rd row, ch 3, dc in same loop, tr in each free loop across to within last st, 2 dc in last free loop. Break off.
   Make a Blue Flower exactly as Red Flower was made. Make a Yellow Flower, using Green for Center.
   Make necessary number of flowers to go along center edge and lower edge of panel, alternating colors as before and allowing 1 inch free between flowers.

HEADING … With Green, ch 10, sl st in 10th ch from hook, ch 12, with right side of flower facing, sl st in center top of First Flower, * sl st in next 10 ch, ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 10, dc at base of 4th row of Flower, ch 10, sl st in 10th ch from hook, ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 20, sl st in 10th ch from hook, ch 12, sl st in center top of next flower. Repeat from * across. Break off.

INSERTION … Make 5 Blue, then 5 Red and then 4 Yellow Flowers.

STEM … With Green ch 10, sl st in 10th ch from hook, ch 12, sl st in center top of first (Blue) flower, sl st in next 10 ch, ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 10, dc at base of 4th row of same flower, ch 10, sl st in 10th ch from hook, ch 12, holding next (Red) flower at opposite side of stem from where previous flower was attached, sl st in center top of flower, sl st in next 10 ch, ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 10, turn work, dc at base of 4th row on same flower, turn, ch 10, sl st in 10th ch from hook, ch 12, holding next (Yel­low) flower at opposite side of stem from where previous flower was at­tached, sl st in center top of this flower, sl st in next 10 ch, ch 6, sl st in 6th ch from hook, ch 10, dc at base of 4th row of same flower and con­tinue in this manner, making stem and joining flowers on both sides of stem as established and using colors in the order given (Blue, Red, Yellow)—see illustration. Break off. Work edging and insertion for other panel to cor­respond. Starch lightly and sew in place as illustrated.
