Star Wheel Collar Pattern #2295

Materials: J. & P. Coats Tatting Cotton, 6 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 14.

First Motif. Starting at center, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 d c in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 10, and complete a cross st as follows: Thread over twice, insert hook in 8th ch from hook, draw thread through (4 loops on hook), thread over once, skip 1 d c and insert hook in next d c, draw thread through (6 loops on hook), thread over, and draw off 2 loops at a time 5 times. * Ch 3, thread over 4 times, insert hook in next d c and draw thread through (6 loops on hook), thread over, and take off 2 loops at a time twice, then thread over, skip 1 d c, insert hook in next d c, draw thread through (6 loops on hook), thread over, and take off 2 loops at a time 5 times. Ch 3, d c in center point of the cross, thus completing cross. Repeat from * until there are 8 cross sts around circle. Join last ch-3 with sl st to 7th st of ch-10. 3rd rnd: 5 s c in each ch-3 sp. 4th to 7th rnds incl: S c in each s c of previous rnd. 8th rnd: Ch 4, d c in 1st s c, * ch 1, d c in next s c. Repeat from * around. Then ch 1, and join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-4. 9th rnd: Ch 10, and complete cross st as before, skipping 2 d c between each leg of cross st and inserting hook in ch-1 sp; ch 3 and skip 2 d c between each cross st. Repeat around (20 cross sts) and join last ch-3 with sl st to 7th st of ch-10 first made. 10th rnd: Sl st in 1st 2 sts of 1st sp, ch 5, * d c in same sp, ch 3, s c in next sp (between crosses), ch 3, d c in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from * to end of rnd. Join last ch-3 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 11th rnd: Ch 6, d c in same sp, * ch 4, s c in next s c of previous rnd, ch 4, d c in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, d c in same sp. Repeat from * around, joining with sl st in 3rd st of ch-6 first made. Break off.
Make 5 more motifs same as this. Sew 3 points of each motif neatly to 3 points of adjacent motifs, on wrong side, leaving 5 points free between joinings (to be joined to solid section).

Solid Section. Starting at lower right-hand corner, make a chain 2 inches long. 1st row: 3 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 2, turn. (Cut off remaining chain after piece is large enough to be held comfortably.) 2nd row: Hereafter pick up back loop only. 2 s c in 2nd ch from hook (an increase), s c in each of next 3 s c, s c in turning ch (another increase—this side will later form center front edge). Ch 2, turn. 3rd row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each s c across, s c in turning ch (this is lower edge). Ch 2, turn. Repeat 3rd row until center front edge measures 2¼ inches, ending at center front edge. Ch 2, turn. Next row: 2 s c in 2nd ch, s c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Following row: S c in each s c across, ending row with ch 2. Turn. Next row: 2 s c in 2nd ch, s c in each s c across, omitting last s c (this is inner edge). Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows until center front edge measures 5 inches, ending at center front edge. Then continue as before, but dec. 1 s c at end of each row until inner edge measures 4¼ inches (center front edge is now completed, and neck band begun). Hereafter continue s c as before, increasing 1 st at neck edge at end of every other row and omitting last s c at opposite end of following row (same number of sts on each row), until neck band measures 6 inches. Then dec. 4 sts on each row at neck edge, 4 times. (To decrease, omit last 4 sts, turn, sl st across first 4 sts. This is center back.) Break off. This completes one half of solid section. Make another half same as this, and join at center of back.

Join motifs to solid section as in illustration.

Buttons. 1st rnd: Starting at center, ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: S c in each s c around. 4th rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in following s c. Repeat from * around. 5th, 6th and 7th rnds: S c in each s c around. Hereafter make s c in every other s c until all sts are worked off, being careful to stuff button firmly with cotton before opening is too small. Fasten securely, and break off, leaving 6-inch length of thread to sew button to collar. Make another button same as this. Sew buttons to center front edge as in illustration, and fasten with ch-buttonloops.
