Petal … Ch 20. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across, 3 s c in corner ch, s c in each ch along other side of foundation. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Picking up back loop only, make s c in each s c to within tip, 2 s c in each of 3 tip sts, s c to end of row. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: * Skip 3 s c, s c in next s c, ch 4. Repeat from * around, skipping only 2 sts for each of 3 corner loops; s c in last st. Fasten off. Make another petal like this to 2nd row incl., ending with ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in 1st loop of 1st petal, ch 2, skip 3 s c on 2nd petal, s c in next s c, ch 2, s c in corresponding loop on 1st petal, ch 2, skip 3 s c on 2nd petal, s c in next s c, ch 4 and complete as for 1st petal. Make 3 more petals, joining as before. With right side of work toward you, holding petals downward, attach thread at base of 1st petal. Work s c across base of petals, keeping center curved. Then work 1 row of s c and 1 row of d c along these s c, decreasing on each row to keep necessary curve for center. Working along side of petals, make 4 s c in each loop to within tip; 5 s c in each of 3 loops at tip, 4 s c in each of next 2 loops, 2 s c in next loop, 2 s c in next loop (on next petal), and continue thus around all petals. Fasten off.
Rose Center … Ch 15, join. 1st rnd: * Ch 6, s c in ring. Repeat from * 4 more times. 2nd rnd: In each loop make s c, half d c, d c, 8 tr, d c, half d c, s c. Sl st in next sp formed by original ring at base of petal. In each sp at base of petals make half d c, 5 d c, half d c. Break off, leaving a 4-inch thread, and fasten to center of petal section.
Stem … Make a 2-inch chain. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Picking up back loop only, s c in each ch across. Break off and fasten at back of rose center.
