First Lady Tablecloth Pattern #7590

MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 10:
Small Ball:
J. & P. Coats—37 balls of White or Ecru.
Clark's O.N.T.—69 balls of White or Ecru.
Big Ball:
J. & P. Coats—21 balls of White or Ecru.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 5.

GAUGE: 2 sps make 1 inch; 2 rows make 1 inch (when blocked). Each square measures about 19½ inches before blocking and about 20½ inches after blocking. Tablecloth measures about 64 x 85 inches.

SQUARE ... Starting at center, ch 11, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 4 (to count as tr), 4 tr in ring, (ch 7, 5 tr in ring) 3 times; ch 7, join with sl st to 4th st of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, tr in 4 tr, * ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, ch 3, tr in next 5 tr. Repeat from * 2 more times; ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, ch 3, join to 4th st of 1st ch-4. 3rd rnd: Ch 7, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr, * 3 tr in next sp, tr in next tr, in corner sp make 4 tr, ch 7 and 4 tr; tr in next tr, 3 tr in next sp, tr in next tr, ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 7, * dc in 9 tr, in corner sp make 4 tr, ch 7 and 4 tr; tr in 9 tr, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th to 20th rnds incl: Work in this manner following chart, making ch-3 for sps and ch-7 for each corner sp and joining each rnd with sl st. The heavy line on chart shows where each rnd begins. At end of 20th rnd, join and fasten off. Make 3 x 4 squares and sew together on wrong side with over-and-over sts.

EDGING ... 1st rnd: Attach thread to a tr, ch 4 and work tr in each tr; in the sps make 2 tr and 3 tr alternately. Work corners same as corners of last rnd of square. Join. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 4, tr in each tr around, making corners as before. Fasten off.
