MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 30:
Small Ball:
J. & P. Coats—28 balls of White or Ecru, or 37 balls of any color,
or
Clark's O.N.T.—44 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
Big Ball:
J. & P. Coats—14 balls of White or Ecru.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 9 or 10.

Luncheon cloth measures 55 inches square.

GAUGE: 4 bls (16 tr) or 4 shadow sps make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

   Make a chain about 2 yards long (14 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: Tr in 5th ch from hook, tr in next 15 ch (4 bls made), * (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch) 8 times (4 shadow sps made); tr in next 16 tr (4 bls made). Repeat from * 26 more times. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 4, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Tr in next tr, tr in 15 tr (4 bls over 4 bls made); * (ch 1, tr in next tr) 8 times (4 shadow sps over 4 shadow sps made); tr in next 16 tr. Repeat from * across, making last tr of each row in top st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn. At end of 4th row, ch 5 and turn. 5th row: (Skip 1 tr, tr in next tr, ch 1) 7 times; tr in next tr (4 shadow sps over 4 bls); * (ch 3, skip next tr, tr in next tr) 4 times (4 sps made over 4 shadow sps); (ch 1, skip next tr, tr in next tr) 8 times. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: 4 shadow sps over 4 shadow sps, * (ch 3, tr in next tr) 4 times (4 sps over 4 sps); 4 shadow sps over 4 shadow sps. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. At end of 8th row, ch 4 and turn. 9th row: (Tr in next sp, tr in next tr) 8 times (4 bls over 4 shadow sps made); * (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, ch 1, tr in next tr) 4 times (4 shadow sps over 4 sps); (tr in next sp, tr in next tr) 8 times. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 3rd to 9th rows incl until 55 rows in all have been made. Fasten off.

FRINGE … Cut five 8-inch strands of thread. Double the strands forming a loop. Insert hook in a shadow sp at edge of cloth (foundation chain edge) and pull loop through; then draw loose ends through loop and pull tight. Make a fringe in both holes of each shadow sp along this edge and opposite edge. Make 2 fringes in each shadow sp along remaining 2 edges (over the tr's or turning chains as the case may be). Trim fringe to length desired.
