MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 20:
Small Ball:
J. & P. Coats—12 balls of White or Ecru,
or
Clark's O.N.T.—20 balls of White or Ecru.
Big Ball:
J. & P. Coats—7 balls of White or Ecru.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 9 or 10.

This amount of material is sufficient for a set consisting of a runner 14 x 28 inches, and 4 place mats each 11½ x 17 inches.

GAUGE: 4½ sps make 1 inch; 4½ rows make 1 inch.

RUNNER … Starting at one long end, make a chain about a yard long. 1st row: Dc in 8th ch from hook, ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch (2 sps made). Make 9 more sps, then work dc in next 15 ch (5 bls made). Work (7 sps, 5 bls) 3 times; 8 sps, dc in next 18 dc, then work 8 sps, (5 bls, 7 sps) 3 times; 5 bls, 11 sps. Ch 5, turn. Cut off remaining chain. 2nd row: Dc in next dc, (ch 2, dc in next dc) 10 times (sps made over sps). Ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (sp made over bl). Make 1 more sp, dc in next 3 dc (bl made over bl). Work 4 sps, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc (bl made over sp). Work 2 more bls, 4 sps, 1 bl, (5 sps, 1 bl) twice; 4 sps, 3 bls, 4 sps, 1 bl, 12 sps, 2 bls, 12 sps, 1 bl, 4 sps, 3 bls, 4 sps, 1 bl, (5 sps, 1 bl) twice; 4 sps, 3 bls, 4 sps, 1 bl, 13 sps. Ch 5, turn.

Note: Chart shows one half of design. To make second half of each row, repeat the first half, starting at center and working back.

   Starting with 3rd row, follow chart until 7th row is completed. 8th row: 3 sps, (1 bl, 1 sp) twice; * ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc (lacet made). Repeat from * across until there are 20 lacets in all, then work 7 sps, 2 bls, 2 sps, 3 bls, 4 sps, 3 bls, 2 sps, 2 bls, 7 sps, 20 lacets, (1 sp, 1 bl) twice; 3 sps. Ch 5, turn. 9th row: 2 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 2 sps, then ch 5, dc in next dc (bar made over lacet). Work 19 more bars, 5 sps, 4 bls, 1 sp, 12 bls, 1 sp, 4 bls, 5 sps, 20 bars, 2 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 2 sps. Ch 5, turn. 10th row: 3 sps, (1 bl, 1 sp) twice; ch 3, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, dc in next dc (lacet made over bar). Make 19 more lacets, 3 sps, 5 bls, 2 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 4 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 2 sps, 5 bls, 3 sps, 20 lacets, (1 sp, 1 bl) twice; 3 sps. Ch 5, turn. 11th row: 4 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps, 20 bars, 2 sps, 6 bls, 1 sp, (4 bls, 1 sp) 3 times; 6 bls, 2 sps, 20 bars, 2 sps, 1 bl, 4 sps. Ch 3, turn. 12th row: 1 bl, 4 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 2 lacets, 32 sps, 2 lacets, 4 sps, 3 bls, 7 sps, 4 bls, 7 sps, 3 bls, 4 sps, 2 lacets, 32 sps, 2 lacets, 1 sp, 1 bl, 4 sps, 2 dc in next sp, dc in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Starting with 13th row, follow chart to top. Fasten off.

PLACE MAT (Make 4) … Starting at bottom of chart, make a chain about 20 inches long. 1st row: Dc in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch. Repeat from * across until there are 11 sps in all, then work dc in next 15 dc (5 bls made). Work 11 sps, 5 bls, 12 sps, 5 bls, 11 sps, 5 bls, 11 sps. Ch 5, turn. Cut off remaining chain. Starting with 2nd row, follow chart to top, working lacets as on Runner.

Note: Chart shows one half of design. To make second half of each row, repeat the first half, starting at center and working back.
   Starch all pieces lightly and press.
