Materials Required—
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET
AND KNITTING COTTON
151 yds. White.
"STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
1 60-yd. Ball Green.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

With White, ch 5 and work 6 tr c in 1st ch, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row—Puff st in each of the next 5 tr c (puff st: thread over needle, insert in st, thread over and pull loop up the length of a d c, * thread over needle, insert in same space and pull loop up same length, repeat from * 3 times, thread over and pull through all loops but one, thread over and pull through 2 loops) 1 d c in end ch, drop White.
3rd Row—Attach Green in same space, s c in d c, * 1 s c in next puff st, 1 s c between puff sts, repeat from * 3 times, 1 s c in next puff st, 1 s c in end ch, drop Green.
4th Row—Without turning work, pick up White at other end and pull loop through first Green st, ch 3, * puff st in next st, 1 d c in next s c, repeat from * across row picking up the Green loop in last d c and complete last half of st in Green, ch 1, turn, drop White.
5th Row—With Green, 1 s c in same space, * 1 s c in next puff st, 2 s c in next d c, repeat from * across row working 1 s c in end ch, drop Green.
6th Row—Without turning work, pick up White at other end, ch 3, * puff st in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * across row ending row with 1 d c and picking up the Green loop to complete last half of st, drop White.
7th Row—With Green, ch 1, turn, s c in same space, * 1 s c in puff st, 2 s c in next d c, 1 s c in next d c, repeat from * across row ending row with 1 s c in end ch, drop Green.
8th Row—Same as 6th row, but having 3 d c between puff sts.
9th Row—Same as 7th row, but having 4 s c between puff sts.
10th Row—Same as 8th row, but having 4 d c between puff sts.
11th Row—Same as 9th row, but having 5 s c between puff sts.
12th Row—Same as 10th Row, but having 5 d c between puff sts.
13th Row—Same as 11th row, but having 6 s c between puff sts.
14th Row—Same as 12th row, but having 6 d c between puff sts.
15th Row—Same as 13th row, but having 7 s c between puff sts, break Green. The remainder of potholder is worked in White.
Pick up White at other end, ch 3, d c in same space, ch 1, 2 d c in same space, * skip 2 s c, 2 d c, ch 1, 2 d c shell in next s c, repeat from * across row skipping 3 s c between last 2 shells.
17th & 18th Rows—Ch 3, turn, 2 d c, ch 1, 2 d c in center loop of each shell.
19th, 20th, 21st & 22nd Rows—Ch 3, turn and work 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c in center of each shell.
23rd, 24th & 25th Rows—Ch 3, turn and work 4 d c, ch 1, 4 d c in center of each shell.
26th Row—Ch 3, turn and work 5 d c, ch 1, 5 d c in center of each shell, break thread. Work another section in same manner.
With Green, crochet the 2 sections together starting at top, s c in same space, * skip ⅛ inch space, 3 d c in next space, ch 1, skip ⅛ inch space, s c in next space, ch 1, repeat from * down side, 3 d c in corner, ch 1, s c in next d c, ch 1, 2 d c in center of shell, ch 1, ** s c between shells, ch 2, s c over loops between shells of 24th row, ch 2, s c over loops between shells of 23rd row, continue in same manner working an s c over each row with ch 2 between each s c to the 15th row, ch 2, turn and work back to top in same manner, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, ch 1, skip 2 d c, 3 d c in center of shell, ch 1, skip 2 d c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 d c, repeat from ** across row, then work other side to correspond, break thread. With Green, cover a bone ring with s c and sew to top as illustrated.
