County Fair Luncheon Set Pattern #7182

MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 9 balls of Blue and 1 ball of White.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7.

This amount of materials is sufficient for 4 place mats, each about 12 x 17 inches, and a center mat, about 12 x 32 inches.

GAUGE: 10 d c make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch. (1 square is equivalent to 3 d c.)

Before starting, divide White into 2 equal balls.

PLACE MATS … Starting at short side, with Blue ch 131 (to measure about 13 inches). 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across (129 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c). Ch 3, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: D c in d c across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: D c in next 23 d c, leaving last 2 loops of last d c on hook; attach 1 ball of White and draw through the 2 loops. Holding Blue at top of previous row and working over it in order to conceal it; make d c in 3 d c, leaving last 2 loops of 3rd d c on hook; drop White, pick up Blue and draw through 2 loops on hook; then, holding White at top of previous row and working over it, make d c in 3 d c, drop White and continue to make d c in each of next 72 d c, leaving the last 2 loops of last d c on hook. Drop Blue, attach the 2nd ball of White and draw through 2 loops on hook; working over Blue, make d c in next 3 d c, leaving last 2 loops on hook. Drop White, pick up Blue and draw through 2 loops on hook; working over White, make d c in 3 d c; drop White. Carrying unused color over next 3 d c only, make d c in d c across, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Now follow chart, beginning at 5th row, until 9 rows are completed, concealing unused color as before and carrying it only so far as necessary to continue pattern on next row. 10th row: 14 Blue d c, 21 White d c, 3 Blue d c, 3 White d c; carrying White over next 3 d c only, make 22 Blue d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in 22 d c, 3 White d c, 3 Blue d c, 21 White d c, 15 Blue d c. Ch 3, turn. 11th row: Carrying unused color only so far as necessary, make 15 Blue d c (counting ch-3 as 1 d c), 18 White d c, 3 Blue d c, 3 White d c, 23 Blue d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 1, d c in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next 23 d c (1 sp increased at both sides of previous sp), 3 White d c, 3 Blue d c, 21 White d c, 15 Blue d c. Now follow chart until 24 rows are completed, always increasing 1 sp at both sides of sps of previous row, and breaking off White when design is completed (there should be 29 sps on 24th row). Ch 3, turn. 25th row: D c in 35 d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c, ch 1 and make 14 more sps, d c in next ch-1, d c in next d c, 15 sps, d c in each d c and in turning ch. 26th row: 32 d c (counting ch-3 as 1 d c), 15 sps, d c in next ch-1, d c in next 3 d c, d c in next ch-1, d c in next d c (1 bl increased at both sides of bl of previous row), 15 sps, 32 d c. Ch 3, turn. Now follow chart until 35 rows are completed, always increasing 1 bl at both sides of bl of previous row (43 d c in center with 15 sps at both sides, on 35th row). 36th row: D c in 13 d c, d c in next ch-1, d c in next d c (1 bl increased), 15 sps, 38 more d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in next d c (1 bl decreased at both ends of center d c-group), 15 sps, d c in next ch-1, d c in each d c across (another bl increased at inner edge). Ch 3, turn, and follow chart to top, decreasing 1 bl at both sides of center d c-group and increasing 1 bl at inner edge of outer d c-groups.

RUNNER… Work as for place mat until 60 rows are completed, omitting China designs at top. Then work rows of d c only, for 2 more inches. Continue with another diamond, finishing with China designs at top (see illustration).
