MATERIALS: Clark’s O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 50, 1 ball of White, Ecru, or any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12 or 13.
½ yd. linen, 18 inches wide.

GAUGE: 7 sps make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

Completed tray mat measures 12½ x 17½ inches across center.

CORNERS (Make 4) … Starting at bottom of chart, ch 59. 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * until 13 sps are made, d c in next 6 ch (2 bls), ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next 7 ch. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in next ch, d c in next d c, ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next, ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c, d c in next 2 ch, d c in next d c, 2 sps, 1 bl, 12 sps. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: 11 sps, 2 bls, 5 sps, d c in next 2 d c, foundation d c in 3rd st of turning ch—to make a foundation d c, thread over, insert hook in ch and draw loop through; thread over and draw through one loop, thus making a chain st; thread over and complete as for a d c. Make 2 more foundation d c by inserting hook in ch of previous d c, then make 1 d c in the usual way (1 bl increased). Ch 5, turn. 4th row: 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 3 sps, 1 bl, 10 sps. Ch 5, turn. 5th row: 10 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 3 bls, 3 sps, 1 bl, turn. 6th row: Sl st in each of 4 d c (1 bl decreased), ch 3, 1 bl, 1 sp, 5 bls, 1 sp, 1 bl, 11 sps. Ch 5, turn. Starting at 7th row, follow chart to top to complete corner. Fasten off.

   Cut linen 13 x 18 inches. Place corners over corners of linen, ½ inch in from edges; baste and sew in place. Cut away excess linen at back of lace, allowing ¼ inch for turning under. Hem neatly. Make a narrow hem all around edges.
