Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 4 balls of Black, 2 balls of Green, 1 ball of Red and 1 ball of Yellow.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.
¼ yd. lining material.
A 9-inch zipper.

Starting at bottom, with Black ch 99 to measure about 9½ inches. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (97 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c). Ch 5, turn. Now work in rnds. 1st rnd: * Skip 1 d c, pc st in next d c—to make a pc st, ch 1, 5 tr in d c, drop loop from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 and draw dropped loop through, ch 1 to fasten—skip 1 d c, tr in next d c, ch 1. Repeat from * until 3 pc sts are made. *** Ch 1, skip 1 d c, tr in next d c. Drop Black, attach Green and draw through last loop (thus making a ch-1). Holding Black at top of last row and working over it to conceal it, skip 1 d c, Green pc st in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, tr in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, pc st in next d c. Fasten off. Pick up Black and draw through last loop. ** Skip 1 d c, tr in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, pc st in next d c. Repeat from ** until 6 pc sts are made. Repeat from *** once more. Ch 1, skip 1 d c, tr in next d c. Drop Black, attach Green and draw through last loop. Working over Black as before, skip 1 d c, pc st in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, tr in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, pc st in next d c. Fasten off. Pick up Black, draw through last loop. **** Skip 1 d c, tr in next d c, ch 1, skip 1 d c, pc st in next d c, ch 1. Repeat from **** 2 more times, ch 1, skip 1 d c, tr in next d c, pc st under turning ch, ch 1, tr at base of next d c. Now work along opposite side of foundation d c, alternating tr and pc sts as before and changing colors to correspond with opposite side, ending with pc st under bar of last d c, ch 1, sl st in 4th st of ch-5 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, pc st in same place as sl st, ch 1, tr in st directly behind next pc st, ch 1, pc st in next tr, ch 1 and continue alternating tr's and pc sts with ch-1 between, as before, changing colors as follows: 2 more Black pc sts, 1 Green; (7 Black, 1 Green) 5 times, 3 Black. Join last ch-1 to st directly behind 1st pc st. 3rd rnd: Ch 5, pc st in next tr, ch 1, tr in st behind next pc st, and continue as for 2nd rnd, changing colors as follows: * 1 Green pc st, 1 Black, 2 Red (all Red pc sts are made of 7 tr); 1 Black, 1 Green, 2 Black. Repeat from * around, ending with 1 Black. Join. 4th rnd: Work as for 2nd rnd, changing colors as follows: 2 Black pc sts, * 1 Green, 1 Red, 1 Yellow, 1 Red, 1 Green, 3 Black. Repeat from * around, ending with 1 Black. Join. 5th and 6th rnds: Repeat 3rd and 2nd rnds. 7th rnd: Work as for 2nd rnd, changing colors as follows: 4 Black, * 2 Green, 6 Black. Repeat from * around, ending with 2 Black. Join. Fasten off all colors except Black. Work 1 rnd with Black only. Drop Black, attach Green to last tr of last rnd, ch 5, pc st in same place, ch 1, tr in st behind next pc st, ch 1, pc st in next tr and continue as before, changing colors as follows: * 6 Black pc sts, 2 Green. Repeat from * around, ending with 6 Black (thus starting another rnd of flower designs, falling between previous flower designs). Continue to work flower design as before. Then work 1 rnd of Black, and fasten off.

Sew zipper along inside of purse, at 2nd rnd from top. Cut a piece of lining material 10 x 15 inches. Double this piece to measure 7½ x 10 inches and make a ¼-inch seam across both short sides. Insert lining into purse, turn under ½ inch of lining at top, and sew neatly to purse.

Handle … With Black make a 7-inch chain. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for ½ inch. Line this piece and sew ends securely to pull of zipper.
