Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
  ⅜ yd. lining material.
  ⅜ yd. crinoline.
2 heavy snap fasteners.
Starting at front edge (beneath flap), make a chain 12 inches long. 1st row: Insert hook in 5th ch from hook and pull loop through, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (1 group); * ch 1, insert hook in next ch and pull loop through; insert hook in next ch and pull loop through, thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops (another group). Repeat from * until 52 groups are made. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 4, turn (ch-1 of last group is included in turning ch). 2nd row: * Insert hook in space before single vertical thread of previous row and pull loop through, insert hook in space after single vertical thread and pull loop through; thread over and draw through 2 loops on hook, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops, ch 1. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 11½ inches. Next row: Sl st across 1st 6 groups (6 groups decreased at one edge), work in pattern to within last 6 groups (6 groups decreased at other edge). Ch 4, turn. Continue in pattern over the remaining 40 groups for 1½ inches (this forms flap). Then dec. 3 groups at both ends of each row until 16 groups remain. Break off. With right side of work toward you, starting where 6 sts were decreased, work a row of s c along edge of flap to corresponding position on other side. Break off.
Cord Handle … Cut 20 strands of thread, each 4 yds. long. Twist strands tightly, then double twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. Wind a thread around raw end of cord to fasten.
Finishing … Pin out crocheted piece on a padded surface to measure as follows: Flap 7½ x 2½ inches (at widest point); remainder of piece 9½ x 12 inches. Press through a damp cloth. Remove when dry. Cut crinoline slightly smaller than entire crocheted piece. Cover one side of crinoline with lining material. Fold in half (excluding flap), having lining inside, and sew with over-and-over stitches along short edges. Fold and sew crocheted piece in the same manner. Slip lining inside crocheted piece, and sew through both thicknesses along edges of flap and opening. To shape sides, mark with a pin a point on seam 3 inches up from lower corner. Fold, having corner meet pin-mark on seam (this forms triangle). Sew sides of triangle in place. Finish other side to correspond. Fasten flap with snap fasteners after folding top edge of sides inward. Close, and fasten flap. Then sew one end of cord just below closed flap, 1 inch in from left side; bring cord down front, under and up back of bag, across to corresponding position of back, allowing 10 inches for back handle; then down back, under and up front of bag; form a knot and sew in place before making front handle; finish with a knot (see illustration).
