Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 1 ball each of Black and Red.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.
A pair of slipper soles.

Instructions are given for medium size (sizes 6 and 7). Instructions for small size (sizes 4 and 5) and large size (sizes 8 and 9) are given in parentheses.

With Black ch 15—toe (small size, ch 11; large size, ch 19). 1st row: S c in 7th ch from hook, * ch 5, skip 1 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across for 5 loops (small size, 3 loops; large size, 7 loops). Ch 5, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: * S c in ch-5 loop, ch 5. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. Continue in this manner, but inc. 1 loop at beginning of each row—to increase, work 2 loops in 1st loop—until there are 11 loops in the row (small size, 9 loops; large size, 13 loops). Then work 9 rows without increasing. Next row: Work across 1st 5 loops (small size, 4 loops; large size, 5 loops). This side is inner edge. Ch 3, turn. Following row: * S c in ch-5 loop (thus a loop is decreased), ch 5. Repeat from * across—4 loops (small size, 3 loops; large size, 5 loops). Ch 5, turn. Next row: Work across without decreasing. Ch 3, turn. Now dec. 1 loop at inner edge every other row until 1 loop remains. Break off.

Attach thread at outer edge at opposite side, and work to correspond. Break off.

Cut 12 strands of Red, each 9 inches long. Holding these 12 strands together, weave over and under loops along instep edge of piece just made. Knot at each end, and trim neatly (see illustration). Place foot on sole. Pin piece just completed in place, and sew securely to stitching along edge of sole. Make another same as this.
