Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of Orange and 6 balls of Dark Blue.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.
1 yd. millinery wire.
Lining material, if desired.
Gauge: 4 pattern sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make ¾ inch.
Bottom … With Dark Blue ch 4. 1st rnd: 11 d c in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in sl st, 2 d c in each d c around (24 d c). Join. Continue making d c in each d c, increasing as necessary to keep work flat—to inc., make 2 d c in 1 d c—until piece measures 7 inches in diameter. Do not break off, but work s c closely together all around, holding wire along edge and working over it so that it is completely covered; keep stretching work along wire as work progresses so that when wire is joined, bottom will measure 7½ inches in diameter (to join wire, overlap wire about 2 inches before completing rnd, and work over both thicknesses).
Lower Part of Side … With Dark Blue make a chain 27 inches long. 1st row: (Right side of work.) S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch until row measures 25 inches, having an uneven number of s c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Thread over, insert hook in 1st s c and pull loop through; * thread over, skip next s c, insert hook in next s c and pull loop through; thread over and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 (a pattern st); thread over, insert hook in same s c as last loop was drawn through and pull loop through. Repeat from * across, ending with ch-1. Make 1 more ch, turn. 3rd row: 2 s c in last ch-1 of previous row, 2 s c in ch-1 of each group across, ending with 1 s c in top st of turning chain. Ch 2, turn. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 5 inches, ending with 3rd row. Fasten off.
Sew short edges together. Sew 1 edge to wired edge of bottom. Then work a row of s c over wire along remaining edge, keeping circumference same as bottom, and joining wire as before.
Upper Part of Side … With Orange make a chain 30 inches long (9 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: * Pull loop on hook out 1 inch, thread over and draw through loop, ch 1 to fasten (a loop st); skip 4 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * until row measures 25 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Make a loop st 1¼ inches long, turn. 2nd row: * S c in next loop, make a loop st. Repeat from * across, making a long loop st to turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 6 inches, turn. ** Ch 4, s c in next loop. Repeat from ** across. Fasten off. Sew short edges together. Sew 1 edge to wired edge of bottom.
Ties … With Dark Blue make 2 ties, each 1 yd. long, as for bands of Sandals. Run 1 tie through loops at upper edge in one direction and run other tie through in opposite direction. Sew corresponding ends of ties together.
