It's Hot Mats Pattern #9073

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 5 balls of main color and, 3 balls of contrasting color, for entire set.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4.
20 yds. heavy cord or fine clothesline.

Small Mats (2) … Starting at center and using thread double throughout, with main color make a 3-inch chain. 1st rnd: Work entire mat over cord. Make s c in each ch for 2 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Make 4 more s c in last ch, s c in each ch along other side of foundation, having 5 s c, in all, in last ch. 2nd rnd: S c in each s c around, making 3 s c in 1st and last s c's of each 5-s c group. 3rd rnd: Continue around, making 5 s c in center s c of each 3-s c group. Continue thus, making 5 s c in center s c of each 5-s c group, until piece measures 2½ inches from foundation chain, ending with a complete rnd. Fasten off. Attach double strand of contrasting color and continue as before until piece measures approximately 6 x 8 inches. Fasten off.

Large Mat … Work exactly as for small mats, having 1st row measure 3 inches and working with main color until piece measures 2½ inches from foundation chain. Then work a 1-inch border with contrasting color.
