Headsize 22

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 3 balls of Orange and 4 balls of Dark Blue.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.
1 yd. millinery wire.

Gauge: (Brim) 4 pattern sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make ¾ inch.

Brim … Starting at inner edge, with Blue make a chain 24 inches long. 1st row: (Right side of work.) S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch until row measures 22 inches, having an uneven number of s c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: Thread over, insert hook in 1st s c and pull loop through; * thread over, skip next s c, insert hook in next s c and pull loop through; thread over and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 (a pattern st). Thread over, insert hook in same s c as last loop was drawn through and pull loop through. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1. Make 1 more ch, turn. 3rd row: To increase 1 s c, make 3 s c (instead of 2 s c) in ch-1 of group; 2 s c in last ch-1 of previous row; 2 s c in ch-1 of each group across, increasing 32 s c at equal distances apart, ending row with 1 s c in top st of turning ch. Ch 2, turn. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off (ends of row are center back). With right side of work toward you, attach thread 1½ inches in from center back. 5th row: Work 2 s c in ch-1 of each group across to corresponding position at end of piece, increasing 16 s c at equal distances apart (be sure there are an uneven number of s c in row). Ch 2, turn. 6th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off. 7th row: Attach thread 1 inch in from end of last row and work as for 5th row. 8th to 18th rows incl: Repeat 6th and 7th rows alternately 5 times; then 7th row once more. Fasten off. 19th row: Attach thread 1 inch from end of last row and work 2 s c in ch-1 of each group across to corresponding position, 1 s c in next ch-1. Ch 2, turn. 20th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off. 21st and 22nd rows: Repeat 19th and 20th rows. Fasten off. 23rd row: Repeat 7th row. 24th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off. 25th row: Attach thread 2½ inches in from last row and work as for 5th row, increasing 28 s c (instead of 16 s c). 26th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off. 27th row: Attach thread 2½ inches in from last row and work as for 5th row. 28th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off. 29th row: Starting at center back, work a row of s c along outer edge, working 2 s c in ch-1 sp of each group across front, having an uneven number of sts in row. Ch 2, turn. 30th row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off. 31st row: Repeat 19th row. 32nd row: Repeat 2nd row. Fasten off.

Sew up center back edges. Work a rnd of s c closely together all around outer edge, holding wire along edge and working over it so that it is completely covered; shape brim in hands as work progresses so that when wire is joined brim will be nicely curved (to join wire, overlap wire about 2 inches before completing rnd and work over both thicknesses) . For stiffer brim, work another rnd of s c over a second wire. Fasten off.

Scarf … Starting at short end, with Orange make a chain 12 inches long (9 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: * Pull loop on hook out 1 inch, thread over and draw through loop, ch 1 to fasten (a loop st); skip 4 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * until row measures 10 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Make a loop st 1¼ inches long, turn. 2nd row: * S c in next loop, make a loop st. Repeat from * across, make a long loop st to turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 10 x 40 inches. Ch 4, turn. S c in 1st loop. * ch 4, s c in next loop. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

Put fishnet across head. Place brim on head at desired angle, and pin inner edge of brim to fishnet. Sew brim securely to fishnet.
