Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of any color for a pad 6¼ inches in diameter.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.
An asbestos pad.

Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st. 1st rnd: 12 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: * S c in next 2 s c, ch 2. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: * Skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, 2 s c in ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * Skip 1 s c, s c in next 2 s c, 2 s c in ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. 5th rnd: * Skip 1 s c of next s c-group, s c in each s c of group, 2 s c in ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Repeat 5th rnd until piece is exactly the same size as asbestos pad. Next rnd: * Skip 1 s c of next s c-group, s c in each s c of group, s c in ch-2 sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Repeat the last rnd once more. Then work rnds of s c in each s c for ½ inch, decreasing 6 sts in each rnd to make work turn under—to dec., work off 2 s c as 1 s c. Fasten off.

Slip asbestos pad into crocheted piece.
