Edging. To begin, make a chain slightly longer than desired length, turn. 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: S c in 1st sp, * ch 5, s c in next sp. Repeat from * once more. Then ** ch 8, skip 1 sp, s c in next sp, ch 5, and make 5 ch-5 loops (as before) and repeat from ** across, ending row with 3 ch-5 loops. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: Make 3 ch-5 loops, * s c in same place as last s c, 3 s c in ch-8 loop, ch 3, 5 s c in same loop, ch 3, 3 s c in same loop, 2 s c in next loop. Then make 4 ch-5 loops. Repeat from * across, ending row with 3 ch-5 loops. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: 3 ch-5 loops, * ch 8, s c in center s c between 2 p's, ch 8, s c in next loop, 3 ch-5 loops. Repeat from * across, ending row with 3 ch-5 loops. Ch 5, turn. 5th row: 3 ch-5 loops, s c in same place as last s c, * into each of next 2 ch-8 loops make: 3 s c, ch 5, 5 s c, ch 5, 3 s c; then, 2 s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop, ch 5, 2 s c in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending row with 3 ch-5 loops. Ch 5, turn. 6th row: 3 ch-5 loops, * ch 8, s c in center s c of 1st ch-8 loop, ch 8, s c in center of next ch-8 loop, ch 8, s c in next loop, ch 5, s c in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending row with 3 ch-5 loops. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: 4 s c in each of 3 ch-5 loops, * into each of next 3 ch-8 loops make: 3 s c, ch 5, 5 s c, ch 5, 3 s c; then, 4 s c in next loop Repeat from * across. Break off.
Insertion. Work exactly as for edging (1st to 7th rows incl.). Ch 5, turn. 8th row: * S c in center s c of next loop, ch 3. Repeat from * until 3 loops are made, ch 3, ** s c in next ch-5, ch 3. Repeat from ** 5 times, ch 4, s c in next ch-5, ch 3, and continue in this manner across. Ch 5, turn. 9th row: Skip 1 ch, d c in next ch, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st. Repeat from * across. Break off. Attach thread to end of foundation ch and work to correspond with opposite side, starting with the 2nd row.
