Captain's Chair Cushion Pattern

COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MER­CERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 12 balls of No. 123-A Flamingo.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

A foam rubber cushion approximately 16 x 17 inches at widest part.

GAUGE: 3 long sc make 1 inch; 3 long sc rows make 1 inch.

SIDE (Make 2) … Starting at straight edge make a chain 14 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures same as straight edge, having an even number of sc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch (2 sc increased), * sc in next sc, sc at base of next sc (long sc made). Repeat from * across, ending with a long sc. Ch 3, turn. 3rd, 4th and 5th rows: Repeat 2nd row. At end of 5th row, ch 1, turn. Work in pattern without increasing until piece measures 1½ inches from last increase row. Next row: 2 sc in first sc (1 sc increased at beginning of row), work in pattern across, 2 sc in last sc (1 sc increased at end of row). Continue to work in pattern, increasing 1 st at both ends of row every 1½ inches until 3 more inc rows have been made (piece should measure same as widest point of width). Then work without increasing until piece measures 8 inches in all, or reaches widest part of cushion.

To Shape Back: 1st row: Sl st in next 3 sc, work in pattern across to within last 3 sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Work off first 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc decreased), work in pattern across to within last 2 sc, dec 1 sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Work in pattern without decreasing. 4th row: Repeat 2nd row. Continue to work in pattern, decreas­ing 1 sc at both ends of row every 1½ inches until piece measures 13 inches from first row. Dec 1 sc at both ends of next 2 rows. Now dec 1 sc at both ends of every other row until piece measures 15¼ inches in all. Dec 2 sc—(work off 2 sc as 1 sc) twice—at both ends of each row for 5 rows. Break off at end of 5th row.

GUSSET … Starting at narrow end, ch 11. Work in straight pattern until piece is long enough to reach around sides. Break off. Sew narrow ends together. Pin Gusset to one side of cushion and, working through both thicknesses, sc closely around. Join. Next rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Join and break off. Insert cushion and join other side to Gusset the same way.
