Boutonniere Pattern, No. 435

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. Pearl cotton, size 5, 1 ball each of Dk. Willow Green, and Mid Rose.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.

Petals: With Mid Rose, starting at center, ch 9, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, make 24 d c in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 3 d c in each d c around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, d c in each d c around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 4, d c in each d c with ch-1 between each d c. Join. 5th rnd: Ch 3, 2 d c in each ch-1 around. Fasten and break off. Make another petal same as this.

Calyx: With Green, ch 3, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Make 6 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * until 30 s c are in the rnd. Then work without increasing until work measures about ¾ inch deep. Break off. Stuff calyx with cotton, place the two petals (one inside the other) into calyx, and sew calyx around edges to petals. Make a smaller flower by making 1 petal only, joining it to a smaller calyx.

Stem: Wind Green around four fingers for 4 times thus making 4 loops each about 5 inches long. Tie ends securely. Make 1 s c in the 4 loops at one time to hold them together. Then over the 8 strands (the 4 loops), work a row of s c. At end of row, make 1 s c through the 4 loops (to prevent s c's from slipping off) as before, and continue working along other side of s c, making 1 sl st at base of each s c. Break off. Sew one end of stem to base of calyx of larger carnation. Sew smaller flower to center of same stem.

Leaf: With Green, ch 30, turn. Make 3 d c in 4th ch from hook, 1 d c in each of next 22 ch, 1 s c in each of next 3 ch, 3 s c in last ch. Then continue to work on opposite side of chain, making s c in each s c, and d c in each d c. Break off. Make 2 more leaves in same way and sew to stems as desired.
