Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (5 balls of Navy Blue and 3 balls of White) or J. & P. Coats (4 balls of Navy Blue and 2 balls of White) Mercerized Crochet, size 10.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.

This material is sufficient for a set of 6 coasters, each 2¼ inches in diameter.

Base. Starting at center, with Navy Blue ch 4, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 7 s c in ring. 2nd and subsequent rnds: S c in each s c around, increas­ing when necessary to keep work flat, until piece measures 2 inches in diameter. Do not break off.

Sides. Work 4 rnds of s c in s c. Then work as follows: 1st rnd: Ch 2, thread over hook, insert hook in 2nd s c, * draw loop through, thread over, insert hook in same place. Repeat from * until there are 7 loops on hook; then, thread over and draw through all loops. (Thus a group-st is made.) ** Ch 1, skip 1 s c, make group-st in next s c. Repeat from ** around, joining last ch-1 with sl st to 2nd st of ch-2 first made. Drop Navy Blue. 2nd rnd: Attach White to 1st s c of s c-rnd (under ch-2 of 1st rnd), ch 2, make a group-st in next s c of s c-rnd, working over ch-2. * Ch 1, group-st in next s c of s c-rnd (under next ch-1). Repeat from * around. Ch 1, join with sl st to 2nd st of ch-2 first made. Drop White. 3rd rnd: Pick up Navy Blue, ch 2, and work a group-st in tip of each Navy Blue group-st with ch-1 between each group-st. Join, drop Navy Blue. 4th rnd: Pick up White, ch 2, and work a group-st in tip of each White group-st, with ch-1 between each group-st. Join. Repeat these last 2 rnds until 8 rnds of White group-sts are made. Then make 2 more rnds of Navy Blue group-sts. Break off.
