Hot Plate Mat Pattern

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball
each of Autumn Glow and Yellow.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2.
9 rubber jar rings.

With double thread—1 strand of each color—work s c's over ring until the ring is completely covered (about 80 s c). Join with sl st. Break off. With a darning needle and double thread, work as follows: Attach thread to wrong side of ring, then draw the needle through the s c directly opposite, * pull needle through next 10 s c to the left, then make a stitch in s c directly opposite. Repeat from * once more, then pull needle through next 10 s c and turn work on right side. Bring needle to center of these bars and fasten (thus making the 7th bar). Then, working around in a circle, work darning stitch under-and-over until center measures about 1 inch in diameter, ending at the center of the larger space. Make a stitch to fasten, then draw the needle through the s c directly opposite, thus making the 8th bar. Fasten securely. Break off. Make 8 more rings same as this. Join rings with neat over-and-over stitches, as in illustration.
